water evaporation good or bad

i have a 200 gallon tank with a 90 galloin sump in my basement and also a 30 gallon tub for my protien skimmer. i just acrylic covers on the sump and container. the main reason i did was to keep so much water evaporiaztion in my basement becasue everything is rusting on me, and to quiet down the water noise when i am working in my basement.

will the covers effect my tank at all?

not at all unless its airtight and the main tank is air tight. air is important for exchange but im sure its not sealed to the point where theres no air exchange.

IMO open tanks seem to do better due to more oxygenation taking place. The more surface area getting air exchange the better. But this is in theory; I don't think anyone did an experiment per se. The only negative would be the possibility of less air exchange I think.

Evaporation is good. I had the same problem, and for less than you'd think, under 200.00, you can get a Frigidaire dehumidifier that actually recovers some of this water: use it watering the garden. Mine pulls out about 15 cups a day. Got mine via amazon.com.

In the winter I will run 10 gallons/day of top off water sometimes... but I have a few tanks hooked up.... I doubt you would have any gas exchange issues if your skimmer is running. To quiet down the noise in the basement I have used 45 degree angles instead of 90s and not left any piping going strait down... then once you hit your sump plumb it going into the sump with a T going up and down the the bottom with a 90 degree at the bottom of your sump. Then, cap off the up tube a foot or so in the air and drill a 1/4" hole in the top. Air goes out the small hole and water goes into the bottom of the sump nice and quite.
