Water flow question

:reading:When calculating flow in gph is it correct to add the volume of the sump to the volume of the tank? e.g.: 100 gallon tank plus 50 gallon sump=150x10=1500gph desired flow rate. Or simply 100 gallon x10=1000gph desired flow rate. Thanks in advance!:uhoh3:

There really is no hard and fast rule about ideal flow rate, although I think typically the calculations do not consider sump volume. You want to know the flow rate in the display tank and it doesn't really matter if you have a 25G sump or a 300G sump.

There's nothing special about 10x tank volume, though, so don't get too tied to the number.

Are you, planning for a variable speed pump? If so I bought mine based on total volume (tank+display). Then you can slow it down if your feel the turnover is too quick.
