The bigger question is "Are there better ways to increase flow?" and to that I would say YES.
When closed loops were popular, there were a very limited selection of flow generators available to the hobbyist. Now there are a wide range of propeller pumps both with and without controllers that move a lot more water for a lot less electricity. The monster pumps used on closed loops aren't as efficient at moving water as a propeller pump. Also, they are much harder to change as the corals grow and you need to rework flow to keep stuff from settling in dead spots.
Keep researching. Its a decision but there are a number of factors involved that may decided you one way or another.
