Water Garden Help

Preformed or liner? Couple of things first, not under a tree and not where rain water or lawn watering will runoff into it. I've been water gardening, I like to call it "outdoor fishkeeping" :p , for over 10 years, feel free to pm me here.

I have installed 3 ponds over the years and learned much from all of them. Currently have a 22' x 14' pond in the back. Biggest concerns are:

1. depth
2. light
3. water movement

If it isnt deep enough it can freeze through in the winter killing everything. minimum is 24" but I know most kits are 18" deep.

If you can its okay to put it under a tree so a bit of shade goes over it, preferrably an evergreen so no leaves fall in. If you have water lillies for shade, go treeless

Water movement is crucial, you will end up with a pit of algae unless you can move and areate the water

I would say, really, if you have a kit, take it back if you can. Its just like tanks, the bigger the more stable it will be. I would try for a 30" deep with a flexible liner in whatever design you want. Also if you free dig it with a flex liner there are tricks to make it easy to care for

If you want any other info or want help in the planning just let me know

Good luck

So, has George finally fessed up about his rather strange affection for Monkeys? I remember a time that he wouldn't talk about it:lol:

It's a preformed ez-flex. It is only 14-16 inches deep. I think I will start with this one and maybe add a larger pond in the back of the yard with a stream to this one in the future. Although, not sure if that is possible with how rocky our yard is.

At least I have an empty 200 gallon fish tank in my basement that I can use for winter.

I agree with Clark, I like liners over pre-formed. Also, if you get a liner use an EPDM rubber liner rather than the pvc or poly sheets. It will hold much better. Clark is also correct about the depth thing. Mine is about 25 inches deep and the fish have done fine for several winters now. Howeve, our original pool was an 18 inch deep pre-form and the fish made it for the 3 years we had that one too so I wouldn't be ovely worried about the depth for now. Depending on what you want to grow you need to coside lighting. I don't get enough sun on mine for the lilies so they don't bloom too often but the upside is I also have very few algea related problems. Anyway, you are going to enjoy it a lot no matter what you do. I have my coffee every morning sitting on the front porch watching the pond, the fish, the birds, and relaxing. I wouldn't be without a water feature in the yard anymore. Good luck with the project. Let me know if I can help(except for digging it, I hate digging!!) :)

We get a lot of sun, we will have to landscape around it for a little shade.

Time to go to Home Depot for a pickaxe.:(

I'm sure I will be in touch. Thanks.

Icepick and Nanook...why don't you bring over guacamole and strong margaritas and we can see if George will open up about the monkeys.

PS: Bring your shovels too.

Hmmm, I can do Guak and Strong Margarita's no problemo:lol:

MMMMmmmm. Fresh gaucamole and margarita's(drool).

I would bring over my pickaxe but I loaned out to my father. I needed it Saturday it's gone. He left it somewhere on the back 40.

One thing that worries me is keeping monkeyboy away from the Tequila.

I have a pick that I could be persuaded to loan out. I know for a fact that it works in your yard too. :D

Well, the pre-formed pond liner has been ditched and a 45 mil liner was purchased this weekend. I spent a good portion of yesterday breaking up rock and clay for Lisa's pond with a pick axe. We're looking at a pond a little over 200 gallons.

How deep? I think the biggest problem you are going to have is keeping such a small amount of water cool enough in the summer for the fish. Is it going to be shaded? 200 gallons in the sun could get pretty hot
