Water going into sump before tank is filled up

So I am planning on switching over my reef tank today to a new one that has a sump. This is my first setup that has a sump and everything. It is a fluval studio 600 that was converted to a reef tank. I want to use 50 percent of the old water in it. So I started with the fresh saltwater. I filled it up about halfway and the water started going into the sump. Hadn't even reached the drain pipe yet. Then I took out about five gallons and it stopped. Doesn't make any sense to me. Any idea what's going on?

Pictures of your plumbing might help does this tank have an overflow all the pictures I saw online were only two bulkheads in the corner no overflow area with weirs

I'm wondering if because that pvc is not sealed over the tube that comes with the tank originally (just slides over it), water is getting in between them and flowing down.

That is not a good setup..

Google Corner over flow kit... This is what you are going to Need for your tank..

HERE IS A EXAMPLE
https://www.amazon.com/All-Glass-Aq...480530772&sr=8-1&keywords=CORNER+OVERFLOW+KIT

you can build it yourself with acrylic or glass baffles....but its not going to function correctly as .
the reason the water is draining into the sump at such a low level is there must be a hole in one of those two pipes very low. or is it leaking around the bulkhead that looks like it was sealed by a 2n grader...

YOU Should just buy a complete over flow kit with the plumbing box and pipe for the size tank you have .

Sorry to bring you bad news but its the right answer

GOOD LUCK

That's where your water is getting in. You have to bond the pipes together. I'm no expert but I think that T is pointless as well. Everything I've seen has one elbow facing down.

Even if it wasn't draining into the sump like it is, that would still be a bad setup? How so? What is the purpose of the corner over flow? Sorry I'm new to sumps.

First off the way its setup now it will be SUPER NOISY and have very little surface skimming.. almost none..

the over flow box will
1. skim more surface area as the water flows over the box
2.Hide your plumbing and help keep fish out of the pipes.
3. With the correct internal plumbing will make the system much quieter and safer against fish getting sucked into a pip and into sump.

The very min you need to do .

1 . be sure there is no water leaking in those pipes
2.Remove those turned up elbows to be straight out
3. be sure you have a ball valve on your pump that feeds the tank to adjust water level to be middle of that top elbow to help reduce noise .
4. put some type of fish screen on those drains .(this can be dangerous as they can get stopped up quite quickly )

One big thing about reef aquariums . the live stock and corals are not cheap doing this wrong will cost you more money in the long run
