Water issues

Well all, its been a while. For those that know me, I have been AWOL since we moved to the new house. Funny how things work but a phone call from Kevin reminded me how long its been. Man time flies.

So, I am looking at blowing the dust off the boxes of equipment and getting my tank fired back up. However, there is one large issue that I can't seem to overcome...my well water.

We have had several issues with water quality from our well. For one, every few weeks iron deposits break loose and turn my water supply blood red. I have invested about $4K in filtration which works for a while. However, when this happens, it blows everything out, mechanical filters as well as the softener, RO/DI, etc. To complicate matters, I have acidic water which worries me about copper leaching from the pipes. Unfortunately, the tank and system is too large to buy water elsewhere. Does anyone have suggestions?

Welcome back to the boards Jeff. What is the potential of getting on city water? I take it that it's pretty slim being that you put 4K into a filtration system. Outside of city water, I don't know what else to say. You could put in a cistern and have water trucked in :)

you live in mentor, is that well still open on windsor road? I dont know what the quality of the water is like, im sure it is mineral rich, but... get 10+ 5g jugs and you might only have to go monthly. but it could be just as bad on an ROdi system i guess.

Have you had the water tested to see about the copper? Seems like if you spent that much money, it should have solved the issue. Did you do it yourself, or have someone do it?

now that you're in the sticks...there are plenty of people distilling moonshine, maybe you could use the still and distill yourself some water

You can collect rainwater from gutters that are not packed with leaves and seeds the way mine are. It is naturally distilled water that really should be quite clean if the gutter is cleaned out, say, with a garden hose.

My friends in Hamdon had this problem with their well water / home water softner system. I can ask them tomorrow how they got their issue resolved. They said every month they were going through hundreds of dollars of media and filters.

Hey all, its good to be back. I moved over the summer to Hambden, about 2 miles out of Chardon Sqr. One positive about Mentor was it had decent water. However, way too congested for me.

Mike, unfortunately city water is out of the question. We elected to move to a township to avoid city income tax. A decision that I am second guessing at the moment. Although a cistern is probably out, a large above ground holding tank is an option. Where to put it will be the dilemma.

The filtration system was installed by Kinetico. On a daily average it works ok. From the ground there was no copper, however, it has a pH of about 6.2 which will leach copper from pipes over time. That little problem is going to run about $1400 to fix.

Thinslis, I would be really interested to see how your buddy is doing this. I am considering having the well redrilled deeper to try and hit a deeper aquifer. Not only the tank issues, but this issue is reeking havoc on appliances (i.e. washer, HW tank, etc.).

According to my friend they have some sort of sediment prefilter that they clean regularly. Then they have an additonal RO unit after the house system for salt water.

Hey Jeff, did you try emailing the guys at Buckeye Field Supply or posting on their forum? They have been very helpful in the past on water issues and they might be better at evaluating the impact to the aquarium.
