Water movement - Not regular powerhead

I am looking for a device to create additional water movement inside my tank. I am currently using regular powerheads in my tank, but I saw someone else setup that has a black, retangular looking, with roughly 1 inch round outlet. I think the outlet can rotate but not sure.

Do you know the exact name of this device and where to buy one?

I believe you are describing a SeaSwirl. Basically it is a motorized unit that moves the output nozzle for your return in a 90 degree sweep.

I run 2 of these on each of my tanks connected to the return pump for circulation.

There is also a new device out called Wavy Sea - does what the SS does, but is reported to be more durable.

You can get both from Premium Aqautics on the RC sponsers page.

Do you think those are better than the SCWD? I know they cost a lot more $$$. What size would you recommend for a 90g?

Not sure, I have never tried the SCWD. My understanding of them is they generate a large amount of back pressure so be ready for a larger pressure rated pump or more powerheads. I also don't know if they make a SCWD in 1" input and I believe the 3/4" model is limited to 1400 GPH.

I have just always used the SS. For me it was just easier to split the 1" return line to 2 3/4" SeaSwirls and mount them on top of the tank (acrylic). But that is on a 180 gallon tank.

You can also mount powerheads onto the sea-swirls if you are creative, or on the wavysea which comes with brackets but is pricier.
I got two used SS cheap and mounted Maxijet Stream mods onto them. See www.ostrows.us
