Water movement, the goal?

Ok I've had a 40 breeder sps reef for a few years know and it has done well but I have always wonder about the water flow movement in my tank. Is it enough, to much, random enough ect... So I'm about to start a 120g full sps build and im looking for a better answer then just "this many GPH / turnover rate. "you all will like this" For enstance in my 40g DT 20g sump I have a Mag 5 return pump an MP10 at full and oh yah a MP40 at half power both on reef mode :) the mp10 and 40 was not started on Reef mode at the same time for a more random from if that make since. So I'm sure your all thinking OMG Not short on flow. But the funny thing is I still have some waist / diatoms and what not build up on the display tank. Even if I crank the Mp 40. some might might think oh just to much LR instructing the flow. Well not likely. Maybe 25-30 Lbs LR stacked and glued together to form two towers. Plus the tank is bare bottom.
Btw the Mp10 and 40 are facing each other on oppensent ends of the tank. Near the front of the tank with the LR / corals in the center part of the tank and my overflow is in the back left corner with the return line in the right back corner.

Know I'm not trying to fix my build up spots of diatoms in this tank. Simply because I'm about to start a new 120g. But I would like to understand the goal better. See to me the diatom should not be laying in my display. That leads me to think that the flow pattern isnt moving all the water / crap into my overflow. I'm mean yah I have random flow but not a productive pattern of moving all the waste into the filtering area.

So for instance the people that have this DT that look spotless most the time.
What are they thinking when setting up the water movement in their tanks?

Hope this makes since.
