Water@ Petmart

Just a question... Not a flame thread.

What kind of water do they have at petmart? I know they have fresh and saltwater. But I remember someone saying it wasnt RO/DI. Has anyone ever recently tested it for TDS or anything else?
Thanks!

If you need good quality r/o in a pinch (and cheaper than most lfs to boot )Glacier brand water kiosks located inside grocery stores work well. In fact the contract with Publix has mandatory cleaning schedules that are enforced. Weekly. At the 2 Publix near me in holiday I get 17ppm tds on Sunray and 14ppm tds on marine pkwy.. FWIW. I don't trust water from a parking lot. too many variables.

mike I am talking about them. they electronically shut off at 50 ppm tds. yes this is higher than you want but better than tap water. I personally recommend you buy your own unit but until then water windmill is great. I talked to the maintenance guy at the windmill one day and he said he does his best to keep it below 10 ppm. I do not know the other companies like glacier but I have used them in the past without issue. I see you have a 210 you should really get an ro/di and save some money. and back pain and gas and I could go on. john at ichthy builds them himself with better filters and membranes than you would get on ebay. I don't know the price but give him a call if it's something you can do. or you could just buy water from him. he is about the only water I would trust because I have used it and tested it myself and I know his maintenance routine. finz has a big filter system but I have never used it myself.
there was a time when that ummmm ? store had a bad ro membrane and someone took it out and left it out. selling the water as if it was clean. it was tested and was 200 and something ppm tds. not something I would ever trust again.

yea... lugging 8 water jugs a week for changes and top off really sucks... I am moving into a new house in a few weeks so i am looking for a unit to put in my garage with a tank... But thats the next big project... Thanks for the info :)

A few years ago the club hosted a talk by one of the owners of an RO/DI supplier (can't for the life of me remember their name, they're over in Orlando) and he mentioned that in all the tests that they've done, the closest water from a non-fish store that they found was Aquafina. He said it measures only like 2 or 3 TDS. Don't use the fruit flavored versions :).

purified water regulations are under 10 ppm and others are somewhere higher. dasani and aquafina are my fav to drink when not at home but too expensive to put in my tank ;)

Matt, that was Aquatic Reef System. They were either bought out or changed their name to Purely H2O, http://www.purelyh2o.com/
I remeber that guy was very helpful and answered all our crazy questions. The last time I ordered from them was less than positive, no answer to emails or phone calls.
Hopefully this new set up will bring their CS levels back to par. Their prices are still very competative.

Mike,

I was buying water from Pet Mart because it was convent for me; however, I had a large algae problem. I suspected the water and I started to ask Pet Mart how they maintain their water filters. The employees could not answer. So I figured I needed to shop around. I called about 6 LFS and the only store that I like the answers was Fish and Other Itchy Stuff. I started buy only water from FAOIS and about 6 months later I had the algae under control. One of the stores I talked to said they did not change the DI often because it was expensive. Did I really want to buy water from them? At least they were honest.

But like Rob said for a 210 G you need to buy our own RO/DI unit. I am convenced it will save you money.

On the Purely H20 units, I ordered one on June 30 and still have not recieved it. Sounds like they are still having some issues. I hope I get my unit soon.

Chris

I was going to pet mart too. Its on the way home from my work. I havent had any issues with their water but have heard bad things. Im going to talk to John when I move into my house in a few weeks. Ill just have him build me one. Thanks again for all the responses. Great info.

John actually uses a conductivity meter to test his water, hes so picky. It actually measures even better then a TDS meter like I have. FAOIS consistantly has water under 1 PPM on the TDS....and he has always recommended to me to change out my DI resin on my RO unit if i hit 1PPM on my TDS meter.
The cleaner water you put in, the less "issues" you will have maintaining water quality. It just one less variable to worry about if you do it right.

Where the hell is this Fish and Other Ichy Stuff anyway? Google can’t find it and it doesn’t come up under “aquarium stores Tampa Florida” either! What are its two major streets?

hilsboro ave out to oldsmar.. or Veterans to Hilsboro. take Hilsboro west to the store. you will go past a Publix on your right and its about a mile past that.

105 fairfield st
oldsmar

OK, there it is, on our web site (duh!)
other side of town, guess I will stick with AQ Creations down the street and Life Oceanic
