water quality

I am confused as to which is best for a reef tank. I have read and been told that tap water is fine for top-off and salt mixing, i have also heard that you should use RO water and i have also heard that you should use RO+DI water. So many different ways which is best, I have a 180 gallon reef tank and am having trouble keeping the red slime algae out. Thanks for any insight.

If you use RO-DI, it will cut down the red slime. you have to much phosphates in tap water. RODI is the BEST! its worth the price.

Very few people are lucky enough to have quality tap water that can be used for reef tanks. You can get a TDS meter for about $10 that will show the quality of your source water. RO/DI water will definitely reduce your red cyano problem and help out your reef. My preference is Walter at airwaterice.com. They have a reefkeeper setup that is awesome. It's a small price to pay for getting the best water possible. HTH

RODI water IMO is the first step in having a nice reef. If you plan on any hard corals its not recommended...it is an absolute necessity.

tap water might work for a while but you tank will become headache after awhile. i would also suggest talking to someone at airwaterice.com. inexpensive and knowledgeable. i think the walter guy is retired or getting there. if you send an email they usually get back to you quickly
