Water Question

Been surfing around reading various posts all afternoon, I came across a couple statements that have me a bit puzzled- can you please comment???

1) One fellow stated that he did a 10% water change two times A YEAR on his 300g tank. I looked at his pictures and the tank is amazing. How does he get away with so few water changes???

2) Another guy with a large tank gets natural seawater for set up and water changes??? Pros and Conns to this approach???

2. many have seem very positive results, conns can be expensive
