water scrubing ???

I have a hot magnum filter that I use to have on my tank but it seemed that I was always fighting with it blowing air bubbles back in the water so I moved up to a filstar xp-2 filter but someone told me that I should use the olf magnum to srub the water ,I,m not sure what the purpose of this is or how often I should do this so any advise and I,d be grateful. Canister filters in general are a problem on reef tanks. They very quickly become nitrate factories. In my experience, the most important "scrubbers" you can have on a reef tank are a live refugium and a protein skimmer.

Gotta go with OTR. The only thing I use a canister for is to run carbon every once in a while.
