Water storage container with cage question

My sister in law has date syrup delivered in these 250 gallon containers with the cage. If I rinse it well, do you think it will be safe to mix water in for my reef?

You will be fine. I bought two 55g food grade barrels off Facebook a year and a half ago. The guy told me that sugar was stored in them. I rinsed them out and filled them up with tap water then added a gallon of vinegar and let the vinegar water sit for a week. I then drained them and rinsed then with a few gallons of ro/di then them them dry. I haven't had any issues of high nutrients or phosphates. My ro/di unit and storage is on the second floor in the laundry room. I use the 55g ro/di storage as my ato barrel. I have a line ran from the barrel to a float valve in the sump. I added a tds meter to this line so I could see if I would get any tds leaching from the barrel. In a year and a half I've yet to get any tds coming from the storage barrel to the tank.

Yes I have used several of them. I have one cut in half in my shed just for an emergency.

Yup, should work fine. Your sister in law should sell them if she isn't already. Locally they go for about $100 on CL
