I want to get a 30 gallon or bigger storage for my ro/di water.
Would a trash can be OK?
What do I need in it anything? should it just sit?
any help would be cool

I would recommend a glass or acrylic tank. many use the rubbermaids or garbage cans but they sometimes seem to be oily and have a bit of a smell to them.

Rubbermaid Brute series of plastic is food-grade safe plastic. I've been using them for years.

Whatever you do, don't use the regular rubbermaid trashcans. Just checked some saltwater that has been circulating in there and the PO4 are at 3.0  . Alot of people use the Rubbermaid
Brute trashcans. Personally I am gonna go get a HDPE open-top barrel from farm and fleet (probably the safest bet here). They charge 55.00 for a 30gal barrel and 100.00 for a 55gal barrel.

Also, as far as circulation and convenience in moving the newly mixed saltwater from the barrel to the display tank, Jose Dieck (jdieck) has got one of the best circulation setups that I've seen (or can remember, anyway).

Are those HDPE barrels from Farm and Fleet food grade?
I have been looking for something to ferment more wine in.

I already have a 50gal SS drum, but I need more room

55gal SS drum is $250+

55gal HDPE for $100 is a better price!

Supposedly they are. From what I gather "food grade" and "HDPE" are basically synonymous. I'd imagine that you'd have to clean these out pretty well before using for food though.

Perhaps a Leg Tank would be better for fermenting/dispensing the wine??? If so, they do carry those too. Make sure to call first in order to check on availability though.

Best thing is that there is a Farm & Fleet right near Rod's Reef :D

I also have one of those 55 gallon mixing tubs. I got mine on-line from Custom Aquatic. I think it was around the same price as F&F after shipping and all but it at least worth a check.

I have also confirmed HIGH po4 coming from the Brute rubbermaids. If you are using a brute rubbermaid, I recommend sticking your head down close/into the contain and taking a big whiff. You wont like it.

They are made of recycled plastic, and who knows what they were recycled from. Also (from what I understand) the plastic can absorb, where as High Density Poly Etheline (HDPE) has a density high enough that it wont absorb.

All of this being said, many people do use the rubbermaaids with no issues, so maybe its a hit and miss thing.

Anyione test the Rubbermaid sump troughs???

I am setting up a 100 gal. to use as a sump and two 70 gal. as a FW and SW resevoirs.

Rod,

Wow!!!!

The bulk of my s/w mixing happens in my hdpe 55 drum...but my RO supply for top off goes through a mini 5 gallon Rubbermaid Brute. Yikes if that's all true....

rxinc,
I use a Freeland Stock tank as a sump (Farm & Fleet)...which is the same style as the Rubbermaid Stock Tanks....whether it's the same material or not, I don't know (Rod's comments about po4 concerns me here too now).

Wow, I do all my top off from a 10gal brute and I use a 32gal brute for my SW mixing.

Looks like I'm doing some tests later...... I just got one of those Merck PO4 test kits so I guess it's time to test it out.....

rod any comments on the stock tanks?

No comments, and havent been able to test one properly. I can say that I have never smelled that "funk" that the brutes have. I dont believe that they are recycled plastic either, but I could be wrong. I will say that my system that has more of the rubbermade/freeland stock tanks does run a little higher in PO4 than my system that only uses the stock tank as a sump. The system with more of the stock tanks usually runs about .07-08 wen phoslock isn't in use, whereas my other system runs 03-04. I dont consider either one bad when compared to the 2.0 + that I tested from the brute. ..Keep in mind that I have done no "scientific studies" just a few simple tests.

There is a Brute container that it is not compatible but it is easy to recognize because it is red. I think it has to do with the colorant used. Other than that all other Brutes are advertized as FDA aproved but I think it is time to do some tests on mine tonight. I will report back.

RockDiver, Here a pic of the mixing tank (55 gal HDPE)and the storage tank. 32 Gal Brute)They are both fitted with a powerhead and piping to either recirculate the water back into the tank and swirl it around or to transfer it, in the case of the Mixing tank to the sump and in the case of the RODI transfer it to the mix tank or to fill other containers.
In addition the mixing tank is fitted with two 350 W heaters and a whitewater Luft pump driving four wood bubblers for aereation.
The storage tank is also fitted with a float and top off from the RODI and a take out for the litermeter that feeds the Kalk reactor.

If you PM me your e-mail I can send you more detailed pictures of the installation and how it works.
