Water Suddenly Cloudy????

I woke up this morning to find that my tank is very cloudy....a white cloud! I have heard that it could be an algae boom but I am not sure why it suddenly happened..

I dont overfeed and my tank is not over stocked at all.....still in the process of adding stuff to my new tank...

Tank is about 4-5 months old....here are the params..

Ammonia- 0
Nitirite-0
Nitrate-0
Ph-8.2

My skimmer was making a weird noise this morning so I unplugged it for a few hours and now it is normal again....potential reason???So any reason or help as why this is happening would be great

could be a snail spawning as well. do a sizeable waterchange and run skimmer wet. I don't have very many snails and they still managed to cloud almost 300gal of water in my system.

could be a bacterial bloom or ammonia bloom, those are usually the cause of white cloudiness. green cloudiness is usually your algae bloom.

but sense your ammonia is at 0. you can rule that out. also smoke from pumps can cause the water to cloud over. it could be your skimmer pump overheated?

Sedra 3500???? yeah that is what is powering my Euro Reef RS80....so what did it do to your tank as far as side effects.....did you have to replace the pump or it doesnt effect it

actually mine was on my ASM. it didn't cloud my tank up, but I have heard of it clouding others up.

when mine overheated the impeller swollen up and it does run just fine still, just is a pain to get it to start up. now I have a reefmaina skimmer with the OR pump and don't have that problem anymore.

Also.....how do you know it overheated?

I would always check my skimmer everyday and when it wasn't running you could feel the pump being very hot. leave it off for an hour or 2 still submerged and then start it back up and it would run fine again.

Do you know if the cloudy water will go away or should I do a large water change......I dont really want to .....shock and expense.....but if I have to I will

Do you have livestock?

If you do, you should already be changing the water, especially since you don't know what caused it yet... Salt and water is a lot cheaper than replacing livestock.

I agree. 10-20% waterchanges every 2 days will help out, along with running carbon.

Why do you ask about the caulerpa.....is this relevant with my cloudy water?

Because caulerpa can go 'sexual' and release spores into the water which clouds the water significantly.

Chaetomorpha doesn't go sexual... And since you said you have no caulerpa you have nothing to worry about.

Last week my snails spawned in the middle of the night. My tank turned milky white for a couple of hours. I have aggressive filtration. Skimmer went pretty crazy too.
