hey, with the heater off in my tank the temp is 79-80 degrees, and i know this is on the high side of the scale for reef tanks (fowlr) is this too high?

ok, because when i told the local saltwater shop here that my temp was 85 (that was when my heater was on) he had a look of horror on his face.

I wouldn't advocate running the tank at 85 as that leaves no margin for error. There are many successful reef tanks run at 83-84 on a regular basis. I personally run from 79-83 based on seasonality variations with the Aquacontroller.

That is fine, and actually typical of captive reefs.

In nature, reefs vary in temperature dramatically....

My tank is always at 80-82 with heater off. I leave the heater to turn on at 75 incase the temp drops at night.

Higher temp = more algea growth too I think
