Water Usage question

I've posted these questions in a couple of other forums. But Really need a larger data set (17 responses so far). This is a pure research effort for something I've been playing around with for a fair part of the winter. Is it that [people just don't know?

In any event if you can help I'd appreciate it. And when I can I'll be more than happy to share my findings.




1) How much RO/DI water are you using on a typical Day/ Week? For Top off and water changes? Obviously the answer isn't much help without knowing some things to control for variables

2) Tank size including sumps and everything

3) Lighting - Type and hours in use per day

4) Open or closed top?

5) Cooling? If so how? Fans, chiller, etc.

6) Seasonal variation in water requirements? If so what season is worse and by how much

7) Where are you located? Since I've opened it up to a much wider audience. Even a state if you're uncomfortable with a specific location. But y concern is a state like WA has significantly different weather and relative humidity between the eastern and western half of the states. If there's a variation like that please find a way to identify it.

Last anything else you think might be pertinent.

#1 about 6 gallons a day throughout my 17 tanks
#2 12,20gal high with a 100 gal. sump/2,55gal and a 29gal with 30 gal sump/75gal with 30 gal sump/46 bowfront with hob filters
#3all t-5s except the 75gal that's 2 250 watt MH
#4just tanks with overflows and sumps
#5the 75gal&the 2,55gal & 29gal.both hoods are closed with heat exchangers vented to the outside .all other tanks have fans on the lights only
#6 summer[a.c.running] or extremely cold 10 degrees or colder ,i use approx 1 to 2 gallons more per day because of the low humidity .
#7 Syracuse New York ,rainy ,snowy,and usually humid ,not many low humidity days ,not very sunny except July and august .

i have a small house and have to air condition if out side temp rises above 65f because of the amount of tanks and the heat given off from the tanks . overall water in tanks and sumps is close to 750 gallons . 17 saltwater tanks ,2 feeder tanks ,44gal RO,44gal salt mix bins all exposed to the ambient air .

1) I use 42 gallons a week for water changes, and approximately 36 gallons for top-off.

2) 300 gallon display, 90 gallon sump, 30 gallon coral quarantine, 30 gallon fish quarantine.

3) 3 x 250 watt MH, 1x 250 watt MH, 4 x 80w T5, 2 x 24w T5

4) Open top with eggcrate

5) Fans and chiller (summer only)

6) Evaporation only goes up significantly when the cooling fans run.

7) Central MA

8 degrees in the winter stable in the summer and the winter has to do with multi zone heating. NJ state

With windows open versus mechanical hvac I have less evap due to higher humidity in the house.
