WaterRoom - Building a new water treatment / reservoir room from scratch

Hi Mark, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner about the graduated tanks. The one you have is similar to the ones I use for mixing salt, but with a smaller cap. Check out Tractor Supply before you buy tanks anywhere. If you have one near you, you don't have to pay shipping as they will order anything for you from their catalog and send it to the store. I use their 370 water tanks for my water storage after it is pumped from the mixing tanks. I'm not sure how much space you may have but Laguna has some great items for sumps. I use their 250 basin (70x47x24)for my main sump. I know I don't need a sump that large, but I like to play. It allows me room for 40 large mangroves, remote plenum and anything else I want to do. Tractor supply also has Rubbermaid stock tanks as well. I initially bought a 150 tank for live rock growout then bought a 300 so I could keep making rock. Don't ask where I went from there! BTW, TSC also has plumbing fittings (bulkheads, valves, unions, etc) at pretty good prices

Scott C-

Impressive room! I like the setup you have, and the plumbing looks great. I won't be housing any online tank equipment in my room because of its location but that would be ideal.

Thanks for the link to tractor supply those rubbermaid tanks could come in handy. There is a store a few hours from where i am at too which is a plus!

It looks like you have a considerable amount of height to the room also. You don't need to access the RO/DI storage container very often. I would find a large square-shaped container that fits the area above your head, add a float valve to it, and would use that upper area for storage of RO/DI prior to mixing, and keep the tanks for mixed salt water down lower, so the salt can be added, mixed, salinity checked, etc. And, your RO/DI should pump the water up there without a problem, then you can use gravity to move it to the mixing tank, sump, etc. It would also leave room for your laundry tub JMTC & GL!

Thats a good idea, i was planning on using one for fresh and one for salt but if i could get a large (100gal) tote for my freshwater and store it above the laundry tub, then gravity feed the tanks it would be great.

Jeremy Blaze -

You are correct it is my furnace room, the house is heated and cooled by a heat pump which sucks all the humidity out of the air. The evap coil on the furnace is essentially a huge dehumidifier so it should take care of any humidity problems that might arise. The house has been extremely dry ever since i installed the heat pump.

gotta live where I do, the place that makes those tanks (ace roto mold) is only 8 min. from me shipping is very cheap :D

downside is no good quality fish stores nearby

Progress!

My RO unit has finally arrived..

This was bittersweet as i am not even close to being ready for it, i had to jerry rig it in a shower for now until the room is ready.

It is up and running now though so at least i have some RO.

I'm definitely not getting the 1:1 waste water ratio they advertise but it is much better then my old unit. The TDS of my tap water is 165ppm so there is a lot to remove!

Also, i'm heading to Maine on Friday to pick up the 55 Gal storage tanks and a few other items for the room so progress should be picking up!

Well after a wasted day going down to calais to get my 55 gal tanks for storage (turns out they never even shipped because they were on backorder) i continued to work on the room

started with some tiling and some crackfilling

I had to do some creative work to get ready to tile underneath the well pump / tank.

Sorry if I missed it but do you have access to a drain nearby? I would suggest it's really helpful when you are working around your mixing station and sump. Is the sump going to be down there? I would also recommend it. Keeping everything maintenance wise together makes your system so much more maintainable. Currently at home I lug buckets upstairs (PITA). At work I automated everything so I never have to touch a bucket. Also, I'd recommend automating water changes using either continuous dosing pumps like the lite-meter III by Spectrapure or comparable. In fact if you have a computer controller like an apex you they have logic for auto water changes.
