I dont like canister filters as they need to be cleaned out often and can cause nitrate problems. How is a sump a hassle? They are easy to clean and use, you have storage with one for a skimmer, pumps, heaters etc. They provide more oxygination, cooling, water flow.

A sump, IMO, is just a place to hold more equipment.
Per-se, it's not really filtration.

But I sure like the fact my heater, my skimmer, any carbon/etc I'd decide to run are all hidden under the stand.

Personally, a skimmer is the only real `filtration' beyond live rock I run. No cannister or other filter ... so I suppose you could run with a hang-on skimmer [just would need to sacrifice tank-space for the pump, input/output]

Most folks around here feel that live rock is the best filtration there is followed by a protein skimmer, and like MM says a sump is just a place to hold equipment, and to keep it out of your tank.

and if you feel the need for mechanical filtration, you could get a Aquaclear power filter. i'm going to get one when i setup my 20g
