watts per gallon for sps

You should be able to get a 260 PAR reading from the bottom of your tank to keep acroporids.

That's about as much as I can give you. After that it depends on the light source you choose.

You could have an 8 ft tall tank with 80 WPG but if you have your corals on the bottom of the tank they will die cause the light won't penetrate that far down to the bottom especially if you have VHO, PC or T5 lighting. 1000 watt halides might work for something like that but again, WPG is not a good measure of lighting for a tank.

Do we need to keep going over how T5s penetrate better than MHs?

I agree that WPG is stupid though.

cmc0814,
The Tek2s are testing pretty poorly at this point. Worse than the original Teks, actually.

They reflect well, its just a wider spread, so you get more light that ends up being outside the critical angle, and bounces off the water surface.

IE, the Icecaps were more focused than the Teks. The Teks are more focused than the Tek2s.

Can people who dont understand lighting please not make comments on it.

1. You can't fit 8 T5HOs over a 55.

2. If you could, you would kill EVERYTHING. You could put tables on the sand, and they'd still bleach out and die.

3. People need to get it through their heads that T5s are NOT LOW LIGHT.
:D So perhaps what I have will suffice!!!?? It sure seems nice and bright in there, but I know you can't just go off that.....

tek?? yeah right!
.... LOL....
and i have to wonder way SLS is no longer with RC?

do yourself a favor and go with icecap!

8- 24 watt bulbs is not overlit by any means, and with a length of 23.5 inches each they should fit in there just fine and the gap in the middle between them should be right over the center brace providing a perfect lighting scenario I think.
But ofcourse Rich would never agree with me on anything so I wouldn't expect this to be any exception :) I don't recall saying T-5 HO's are LOW LIGHT, but hey maybe I can't read either.
Love you buddy ;)

reefkoi, he was talking about 48" bulbs, not 24" bulbs. So what 24" bulbs would do is irrellivant.

Oh I see Richard, I thought everyone was recommending he switch out his 48" bulbs with something else. I'm sorry to suggest using 24" lights. That was so dumb of me, I'll go put my head back into my *** now.
Thanks Dick, I mean Rich..........LOL
You are so cool, I love you so ****ing much, you are my ****ing hero
Hopefully one day I can quit working, have 7,000 posts and do nothing but rule the RC like you man, damn you are my hero.

EvilE, does your fixture happen to be the coralife one?
Yes, the two T5 light fixtures are coralife, and the T6 fixture is Catfish lighting......why? Bad??
