Wave box tweaking help.......

I have had the wave box on a 300g tank that is 8 foot long for 1.5 years. I can't seem to get over a .5 wave across the top and I have been told that I should be getting twice that, at least.

When I have it set to cycle on and off for total of 1.5 sec on get that much of a wave. When I set it for little linger it goes away.

One question how long between tweaks of the timer do I need to wait to see the "wave" develop, 5sec, 30sec, 1 min, 5 min, 1 hour, a day?

Thanks

Hello Jim. It is very hard to tell you the exact number because not every tank is the same due to aquascape, powerhead placement etc. I assume you are not using the tunze wave controller. For long tank like your the interval should be longer. My friend has the same size tank 96x30x24 and i could get 1.5" of wave in his tank with 1 wavebox...

The best way to dial in the wavebox is to turn off all the powerhead in the tank. Once you have the wavebox going, you can turn them back on. If you are using the tunze wave controller 6091 and having a hard time dial in your box, let me know. I could help :D

Two way i can help you.

1. post a picture of the wavebox placement. It is hard for me to picture what you describe on the placement.

I want to know if there is anything blocking the way...

2. Drop me a call and will get it going over the phone. No worry it is not a 1 900 number... :D

I will get a pic tomorrow and then we can do it her or over th phone..........

I will PM you with my number or you can PM yours.

Thanks

Jim, i won't be able to view picture in photobucket while at work. If you decided to do it during the day, email the picture to my email address

I will review the picture and will chat. Something you can do to help improve performance

1. There is two small holes in the back of your wavebox. If you are not using the bracket mounting, use the two plastics screws that come with your bracket mounting kit to plug it. It will help a bit.

2. Make sure the blue ring sponge are not covering the pump intake. The blue sponge is for noise absorber not prefilter

3. Make sure the solid part of the intake screen facing down.. Work well for me that way.

4. Make sure the top of your wavebox expose outside of the water the higher the better but not too high (like 2")

5. Make sure you move the white dial knob super slow and take time to observe the wave in between adjustment. At least 1 min...

Intake screen is the part before the nozzle. The part that has a bunch of slots that mount onto the motor block...

Okay.....

Rotated the motor so the solid is down. the box is out of water as far as it can go which is about 1" and the was ve has gotten ltiitle stronger.

I have noticed if I turn the return pump off so the water level in the tank lowers and the wave box is farther out of the water the wave gets "lots" bigger. However, the way the tank was made in the corners I cant raise the box higher.

So I live with this wave or put the box in the 125g and buy streams with controller?

Your opinion.

Thanks

1" is plenty of room already. I have seen wavebox set at 1/2" above the water. Let do this...

Turn the white knob counter clockwise till stop....

Slowly (i mean very slow) turn it clockwise. If you see the knob move, you are moving it too much. Once you made the adjustment, stop and observe plus give the wavebox time to build up the wave freq...

If you don't see anything after a min, make another small adjustment then wait for a min... if you still don't see anything, repeat the adjustment and wait till you get the right frequency.

Make sure you don't have any powerhead running during the fine tuning process.

Make sure you don't have any source of flow direct or right next the the wavebox outlet in the same direction.

Make sure you don't have rock work blocking the path.

lastly, make sure you are being patient... :D

That wavebox in a 125g is a waste IMO

Good luck..

It sounds like you are losing the wave to the corner overflows, this is common, the energy is lost to the spill over. The only solution is to use a durso so the overflow is backed up to nearly the same height as the tank surface itself. Otherwise, Steve's advice is correct.

I have a 45 degree diagonal "coast to coast" over flow across the back.

I have not had time to tweak the timeing since last night. The one thing that I did change and made big difference was change the orientation of the pump in the box so the "blank" side was down.

Even with this little change I can see the movement on the bottom at the other side of the tank. which I couldn't see before.

Thanks

Jim, what kind of durso pipe are you using? As Roger mention above. You can adjust the durso to raise the water level inside your overflow so it doesn't affect the wave motion due to spilling over. I can show you how to build the CJ stand pipe on your own and it should work very well.

The other thing that will help is make sure you installed the small screws in the threaded holes in the back. Even if you used magnet holders. This adds about 1/16- 1/8" to the wave height.
