wave subject and lighting

I am wondering if the wave makers that make the current goes left to right really do any better job than just normal wave that circulate the tank. What kind of wave does the SPS need and is there any metal halide that is small, like a clip on the glass type, if there aren't any which one is the smallest metal halide available right now.
