Wavebox

so i wake up this morning to hear my wavebox alarm going off.. i take it apart and find a snail in the stream.. not a problem i took him out and noticed that the stream is wraped ina blue sponge.. it was filthy... so i clean it out and wavebox is working great again.. but what i want to know is do i have to keep that blue sponge around the wavebox? or can i run the stream and wavebox without it?

Without the sponge it gets noisy, The sponge really should be around the motor and not the intake so it shouldn't really be filtering the water.

thank you i will pull the sponge back so that it is over the motor then
