Wavemakers for 220g SPS Tank?

I'm very interested in Gyre. I'm just curious how many gyres / MPs I need for my 68x30x25 220g SPS tank.

I'm thinking either 2 gyres or 1 gyre + 1MP40. If I go with 2 gyres I will probably go with 1 horizontal & 1 vertical.

How do you guys think?
Thanks!

My tank is a little smaller than yours at 190 gallons, but I'm using 4 mp40s and I'm happy with the amount of random flow they provide.

60x30x26 running 1 xf150 and 2 mp40qd.
It's the right amount of flow in my tank so far.
Gyre at 40% and both mp40s at around 75%

My only thought is whether you have looked at the newer larger XF-180 gyre pump that I believe was shown (or supposed to have been shown) at MACNA. I would do a bit of research on that to see what the time frame on it is, since that might suit a 220g better than then the XF150 (though it sounds like from Reefnub the 150 might be perfect). Just depends on what the improvements with the XF180 are.

I have one Gyre XF-150 in my 5' long 187g tank and it pushes my sand bed around. It's very strong, even set at 40%!

Mine 200 is something like 72x24x28 mostly SPS and one XF150 was more than sufficient. Two would be good for more elaborate programs but they lack wireless or Apex control. However it constantly broke down and it was replaced with 2 x MP40WES's controlled by Apex. Prior to the Gyre it was two WP40's and they were ok. I have a pretty good series of modes setup during the course of the day and pretty happy with MP40 especially being quiet. Supposedly the Gyres are now "improved" with better rotors, mounts and other parts but I'm skeptical and its telling they dropped the price by $50.

I run a 150 on my 84x28x24 at about 3/4 in pulse mode, works great. Ramped it up over 4 weeks to where it is now and will push it to full in the coming weeks.

That's great thanks everyone! I will try one out first and possibly the XF180 if they come out before I need it!

Thanks!

One of my clients has a 120x30x24" tank with 2x XF150 and 2x Tunze 6105 (on controller switching back and forth at 100%) The Gyres are on at about 60%. They are powerful! It's a mixed reef though with lots of fleshy corals like Euphyllias and such. That's the only experience I have with Gyres.

On my 8'x2'x2' tank I am running 2 of the fx-150s one on each end along with 2 mp-40s (1 older style and 1 QD) on the back wall. I tried running a single 150 but wasn't happy with flow on the far end. Currently running both 150s in constant mode at 60 or 70%. It does push the sand around the tank especially in the middle where the 2 flows collide. The mp-40s in pulse really contribute to creating random flow as they intersect the flow from the 150s.

On a shorter deeper tank like yours I like the idea of 1 running vertically and 1 horizontally like you mentioned. That is how I plan on trying it on my new 72"x36"x26" tank once it is delivered.

Great info! I'll try it out! Thanks!
