We have a Great White

Maybe one of those kids that sees it will figure out a way to protect them in a way no one thought of before.
And that is why we have most of the animals that we have at MBA. We want everyone to see that there are a lot of great things in the ocean. Until recently we havnet had any problems with the GWS. But we want everyone to see that it doesnt go around killing everything it its path like you see in the movies. Brining a guest face to face with animals is the best way to insprie people, we (you and I) just believe that should be done in different ways.

gatohoser Sorry, I didnt answer your last question. Which will go fist, the GWs or the other animals in the exhibit? The GWS no questions asked. We have had a lot of those animals in there since the exhibit opened in 1996, and that is what the idea of the tank is for, the animals what you wold see out in the open ocean. The GWS is just a visitor and we have said that since day one. Having an animal that is full grown in there would not be too comfortable at all, that is one of the reasons we went with a young-of-the-year. Also, have you ever tried to catch a tuna? The aquarists do not enjoy catching the tuna, the biggest on tops out at about 400-450. Imagine catching that, plus it is an animals that is built for speed.

For the record, eating beef does NOT cause the destruction of rain forrests. Fishing doesn't deplete the ocean of its resources...

OVERPOPULATION is the problem. Address that and solve the others.

Sorry to go off topic but statements bashing meat get to me. The shark exhibit seems an incredible step forward in helping to understand such a wonderful and almost mythical creature. What can be learned from the inconvience of ONE shark could benefit thousands of others. Likely it will be released back at a certain point but even if it is not I believe that a greater service to Great White understanding and preservation will be accomplished.

It is a diifficult task but if we can seperate, or at least suspend for awhile, our emotional response to the shark in captivity from the logical one I think the result of this capitivty will be quite positive.

As far as the soupfins go, well, isn't that what GW's are supposed to do... Kill stuff? If it had been a small tuna I am sure no one would have cared much. I'd have been surprised if it hadn't killed anything.

According to a volunteer when I was there last weekend the hammerheads pick off a sardine or two on a fairly regular basis. Predators eat things.

I think Sat is right, but sharks are not just killing machines.

I worked with sharks and marine mammals in the past.
The sacrifice of a few specimens is a small price to pay for all the knowledge we can gain from captive animals. There may be a time when there are no more sharks in the wild , in a few decades, and institutions like this may have a way of reproducing this shark like some do with whales and dolphins, now.

Try to keep this thread to update us in the shark progress.
Keep the good work MBA!

The more we use a specie for our service or amusement the more we guarantee their wellness. There's no shortage of horses

:p

I had to watch the OC to see the new Star Wars trailer

:rolleye1:

"The more we use a specie for our service or amusement the more we guarantee their wellness. "
Dude..I don't even know how to respond to that.
Overpopulation is the problem...hmmm, I tend to disagree. How about the sharing of resources? you know like 80% of the wealth held by 20% of the people and all that??

yeah i missed that. I think i just tune out the little faces...maybe we can breed gw's so that it's like having cats and dogs...I can just imagine Bob Barker in 40 years (yes, I'm sure he'll still be alive, somehow) saying "And don't forget to spay or neuter your great white sharks" We'd be a nation of prosthetic arms...
despite that room being under lock and key, i'm still waiting for some lunatic to get in and jump in the tank, as happens pretty often at sea world...

The reason 80% of the wealth is controlled by 20% of the population is because 80% of the population would squander all but 20% of the wealth. Reproduction rates would hit the roof.

i can't believe some people. fishuman...we keep trying to turn things back to the shark, but basically when the thread starter is gone, we start bickering. he's letting us down- he needs to just stay on here eternally to keep the peace and sedate us with shark news...I agree to nahzing. (it's hard to type in a german accent) specifically, a bad german accent.

yarquint, it's spelled nut-zing. Saw it on a Sgt Shultz T-shirt once.

Back to the shark, which by the way is female.

tacocat Have you been looking under her fins again? Thought we talked to you about that already.

beerguy If that were the only animal in there eating the sardines and anchovies, we would be looking good. The Galapagos sharks have a taste for the Pacific Bonito. Next time you go to the exhibit, look at all the smaller looking tuna, some have bite marks about the size of Galapagos sharks.

ediaz Ya not a big fan of the O.C.

saturnkk I have to agree with you on one of the things you said. Overpopulation does increase the need for fish, but the way we fish should be looked at a little more closely perhaps. When you eat shrimp, do you know how much bycatch is involved in that. For every pound of shrimp from the sea, there is five pounds of bicatch (Empty Ocean, Empty Nets).

Thisarticle is a little more telling, instead of what the online ones want you to see. The actaul write up was a bit longer. It is interesting to see that the guy making a big stink is some average (insert name here) Cleatus that tends to follow whales and dolphins and doesnt have a degree of any sort, other than high school.

Today marks the 6th month that the sharks has been on display, and dispite what you may have read in the papers, the internet, or heard on tv, she is no closer to leaving today than she was two months ago. This was a tid bit I found kinda cool, out of all the GWS ever held in captivity, this one has outlived all of them combined. Honestly I kinda wish that there was not as much press going on right now, as it is makeing the lines to get into the place long. If you plan on coming, order tickets off the website or call the advance tickets office. This past weekend we had about 15K people come in, and quite a few didnt know we even had a GWS (until a few days ago). Did anyone think she would make it this long? I didnt, but I am glad that she has.

I didn't. I don't know what you can learn from a warm blooded shark in Captivity, but im glad she is still alive.
