We have a Great White

I made it to see the shark. It was great. Sorry to see it go. I'm joining the aquarium. Did captain Kirk take the great white into the future like he did the whales from the aquarium?

saturnkk I am not sure if Discovery did anything or not. I will find out for you. There were a lot of different media outlets there over six months. I dont know that any documentary is in the works for her specifically because we feel that the story has just begun. Her story will end when we get the electronic tag back, but another story will begin when we get another GWS.

EmergencyDpt Glad to hear that you were able to get squished in with everyone else to see her. I think that everyone was sad to see her go, but we knew going into this it wasn't going to be long term. Captin Kirk didn't take her with them. The Enterprise only took George and Gracie (names of the whales that were in the MBA Kelp Forrest exhibit in a Star Trek movie).

You can see pics of her release here

We have gotten news of the tag falling off. It sees as though she was spending most of her time here locally, mostly south of Monterey, in the Big Sur area. We dont know any specifics yet, we need to recover the tag before we will know any specifics, but we have a good idea about where she has been and what she has been doing. I checked the website, and they are not making the announcement yet, becuase we dont really know everything there is to know...yet.

Kind of a way to tell how the area of Monterey is, there were a lot of local hotels that were very vocal in how unhappy there when we brought the GWS to MBA. When the crowds of people came, they all of a sudden got happy in the off-season. Now, the most vocal critics for us on letting her go, the local hotels, not all, but a fair share.

saturnkk We wanted to do a 30 day tag to get some fast results. Mostly because of the imprinting theroy that was floating around. Imprinting is when an animal get too used to not having to work for thier food, and starves to death. Like the animals in a zoo could never be released back into the wild because they associate with the zoo keepers with food. There was that, and we were just too excited to see what was going to happen over the 30 days.

Hi all,

I thought it might be cool to let folks that have been following this thread know that they can have direct access to one of the team members from Monterey Bay on the White Shark Project. Jon Hoech will be speaking as a keynote at MACNA on this project (http://www.macnaxvii.com). This is a great opportunity for folks to not only see video and images, but learn more by asking questions!

Personally I'm fascinated by this project and its results. I'm looking forward to the talk.

Regards,
Steve Howard
President, WAMAS

For those that do not know Jon Hoech is one of three curators at MBA. This guys is awesome, defienately knows his stuff. I am glad that I dont have to travel to see him, but I would.

I need to clairify a post I made ealier. The tag fell off in the Santa Barbara area, off the coast of Point Conception, not Big Sur. The tag was recovered, and we should be getting an update sometime this week. I tired to edit the previous post, but you are only allowed to edit 60 minutes after the original post. By the way things are looking, they are thinking that she was headed down to Baja California.

A quick update for everyone. We have officially started our season down in Southern California. The Net Pen is/was supposed to be in place today. Things are looking good. If you are planning a visit, might I suggest late July to early august...:D

iam happy when i came home for christmas we got a glimpse of her..sad to see her go though...was hoping to see how big she got when i came home again soon..i just hope she survives out there.. i know she should but everyone worries

Just saw a documentary about the Monterey aquarium on PBS. The Great White was a major part of the show.

Sorry I didn't post before the show :o . I'm sure they'll run it again on Nature.

Although I am no longer with them, ready for round two? I am pretty sure that they are going to be busy this weekend and the weeks to come. MBA

If you wanna see the exhibit, from 7am to 7pm: OBW cam

wonrib00, sorry to hear you are no longer with them. Thanks so much for the update! This is awesome! :)

You are very welcome. I was A LOT of fun working there and I got to learn a TON of stuff. It was a free education, I miss those days...and I got to see some really cool stuff. Hope everyone enjoyed and learned as much as I did.

thats awesome, I will have to go to the MBA soon, would be much safer than a cage dive! and worth a trip to Cali for sure!
