Wear gloves in your tank

Just a reminder to wear gloves.I recently had a cut on my hand and was doing a water change.I ended up with a infection in my hand and have been on antibotics for 5 weeks.Dr told me today if it dosen't go away by the 16 they will cut my hand to find drain it out and treat. Now Chris D called me the other day because he touched rock and his hand blew up also,I told him my smythoms and his were the same but sounded even worst. He was admitted to hospital and had to get hand surgery. Now Andy D has the same thing going on and is on antibotics to. So what I am saying is wear gloveswhen you put your hands in the tank. This is serious stuff could kill you!

I have been in the hobby with my hand in the tanks almost daily for 11 years+. I must be lucky. Gloves are [profanity], and I won't lie I will have to learn the hard way to stop. I hope you get to feeling better soon!

I do wash my hands with soap and water every time I stick my hand in -- and within 30 seconds. Not sure if that has helped or not. I also use the **** out of some "Working Hands" green hand lotion!

I did the same thing as u for the past 11 years and I am a beliver now. Also the Doctor told me that because I have a total knee replacement that if the infection spread I could lose it.The other two fellows I told you about have been in the hobby over 20 years so no one is invinceable. Hope your luck continues but I purchased gloves

I went to the ER last year after moving stuff in the tank and removing some palys. I wore latex gloves, but not full length.

Wheezing, chills, sweats, and heart palpitations.

This scares the [profanity] out of me. Makes me want to sell everything off. Feel better

I have been also putting my hands in my tank for many years now. People are always telling me I have the hands of an old man (they are so dry). My wife and daughters keep telling me to use hand cream. I never do because I am afraid it will get in the tank. I do wash my hands with hot soapy water after they are in the tank though. I will probably buy some full length gloves after reading this thread though.
Feel better guys. I wish you all a fast recovery.

I think horse mechanics use these types of gloves:lolspin:

Seriously though, I know that I should but I don't. After so many stories, I'll be sure I pick up a pair the next time I'm at the LFS.

I'm going to have to agree with you Matt.....but I'm guilty of not wearing gloves myself. I stick my hands in the tank almost everyday and as you stated "I hope your luck holds out". Sooner or later an issue will arise and it may be costly. I often come out of the tank with numerous bristleworm stingers stuck in my fingers from making contact without knowing it....the effected finger gets itchy and then swells for a couple of days before it subsides. You think I'd learn my lesson...but like alot of us here ....I am lazy. I have to get in the habit of wearing gloves.....that link you provided looks like thin plastic gloves..is it a disposable glove?

I actually had the infection before (2010) and have it again:deadhorse:. I hate gloves but used the ones Matt gave me Sunday at work and they are pretty good. I acclimated a bunch of fish and the only water in the gloves was from perspiration from sweating.

I have attached a word document that I got from the doctor back in 2010 that describes one type of infection

A 60 year old guy an hour from me runs a saltwater store and never uses gloves. For about 40 years. Not sure if he ever had a problem tho. I just got those aqua gloves a few weeks back and used them a couple times. I won't much until I get an infection, probably will after....LOL

Oh man...feel better!!

I was so sick TWICE!! Chills, temp 101-102 and very weak...I told my wife to watch me...6-8 hrs later I'm back to normal...it was scare...I was about to tell my wife to take me hospital.

Now I'm using throw away rubber gloves but it still punch holes if I'm trying moving rocks etc.

Need strong rubber that corals/rocks won't punch thru it
