The purpose of this question is very straight forward.

Should the club have a website, where, important info about who we are as a club, how we meet, perhaps other organizational data like meeting or frag trade info - and retailers or businesses that both we support and support us be kept. The exact information could me changed later if the masses think something is inappropriate.

This would also be a faster way to direct new people to our club. Rather than explaining how to get to us on RC.com.

At this time, all forum and communication will stay with Rc.com - and this would be evaluated later.

NO cost is expected for this at this time.

A yes vote will tell them to proceed, a no vote and it will be tabled for another year. A yes vote will yeild a site for approval of the current club, all members joining after this date MAY be exempt from offering opinions and will be decided if it becomes an issue.

I again ask only those who have attended any meeting, or posted at least 1 time in the forum to vote only. Reef Central Members from other states who are not be active in our growth please refrain, for obvious reasons.

I voted yes as long as we have people who want to put it together and maintain it at no cost.

I lease my own virtual server. If we decide to go with it, I can host at no cost, but can't promise any routine maintenance. However, if someone wants that part, I provide accounts to be able to accomplish it. I am also running another site with a portal and THINK I can just add another site running off the same software. Besides just using the e-mail and space to dump stuff, am working on www.valleycorps.org Guest access doesn't show much. Can't see more than one forum, gallery hidden, and a few other things. If anyone wants to check it out send me a PM for a test login I have. Just don't want it available to the public for obvious reasons.

Also, if I can host both unter the same software, moderators and admins can be given permission to make updates and need know nothing of HTML. Adding a news item is no more difficult than sending an e-mail.

Hey, free is always better than paying!

I don't mind registering the website. Again, any donations would be appreciated. We'd first need to finalize the name and address we want. No sense in me registering something if we decide to change it! :D

I'm thinking I can put up a simple PHP forum for selling/trading and just keep a close eye on it, as we would want to keep it for those purposes only unless we decide differently down the road. It would be there then if we did.

I really do need everyone's input on a logo and color scheme. I mean, I can take what I've currently got up there (modify it a bit to use the name we decide on) and get it started, with perhaps a logo contest forthcoming where everyone can submit ideas and then we can vote on it. Or take a poll.

If everyone likes the sound of that, Scott, I can have something to you by tonight in about 15 minutes if you can host it.

Makes more sense than paying. I have what amounts to a private server. Even if someone wants to buy a domain name, all I need to do is provide the DNS info and can add another virtual domain. If I run out of space, just adding more would be much cheaper than another hosting plan somewhere else. If a virtual daomin isn't liked (can see an example with the above site. Can type www.valleycorps.org, yet ends up in a subdirectory of www.vancaster.net), I can add additional full domain hosting in the same space for only $5 a year or something like that. In either case, can also create any needed email accounts using the domain name.

IF I ever run out of space, will worry about it then. Probably wouldn't be much to add more and will just be my contribution. Even if I can't afford it, it would still be less than another account elsewhere that isn't even a dedicated server (well, a virtual one anyway, but amounts to about the same).

As for moving it tonight, lets see what the plan is first, and what we are doing with it. I can then set up accounts for any that need access for updates and what not first. If we go with a portal, could then integrate what you have already, and then allow those interested mod or admin access to keep content current. Will take a bit to set all that up here, but once done is easy to maintain.

Sounds like a (virtually) good plan.

Would be nice to have the domain name purchased and registered as I believe the cost (without the traditional hosting service) is pretty minimal.

Scott, what are the pros and cons from your end related to having the domain name purchased? With an simple acronym site address (such as www.fvrc.com) is there a risk of cross addressing (for the lack of a better word)?

Not sure what you mean by cross addressing. Otherwise, any domain name works just fine as long as it's not already in use and properly registered. When registering it, or after, the DNS info needs to be added to resolve to the correct server when people try to reach it.

Just for a domain name, it shouldn't exceed $10 a year. May even find it cheaper. Where it's registered doesn't really matter, so the cheapest is best. Is no hosting involved, they just process the registration. I think all the domains I already have were all just a bit under $10 a year, and just over $7 a year if I paid for three years. I've seen the average prices vary a lot though, so no clue what it would be today. I can go look for the price from the two places I usually deal with, but again, doesn't matter much if just a registration.
