weight question

I think I have finally landed on a new tank. The plan is to go with a pre-drilled 150g. Not as much of a step down from the 180 as I originally anticipated however it won't jut out into the room as far. I am concerned about weight though. Normally I wouldn't be as concerned but the wall I want it to go against runs parallel to the floor joice. The good news, there is a beefy I-beam running right where I plan to put the tank.

I am interested in opinions/experiences. Do I need to put any additional structural reinforcements between the joices?

I would not worry about that setup one bit. Are you going to be spanning at least 2 of the joists? I would think you should be more worried about adding strength to the sagging storage shelves :lol:

I am not sure if it will completely span 2 joists as the tank is only 18" wide. I am not as concerned with the floor sagging as I am with the floor board in between the joists.

As far as the shelves are concerned...sore subject. We moved way too much junk from the old house. As far as I am concerned, we could have tossed it all.

If you are very concerned you could just add bridging (short boards stuck between the joists) nailed or screwed in from either side to help spread the load to the next joist. If it wasn't $275 in gas to get out to your new place I would be willing to come and help stick them in

If you put 3 cross braces across there at about 2 ft intervals you would have a pretty good support system IMO. I would try to put them at the one foot mark, the 3 foot mark and then the 5 foot mark if you can measure out where the stand will be.

No kidding. Maybe you can find a cheap flight from the west side?

I think I will add the cross bracing. Probably unnecessary but a good precaution.
