but it was only rock.
the aquaclear refugium i had built (just sand, and rubble till i was off to get a bit of chaeto tomorrow) had its pump shut off in the beginning of the night, by the time i woke up late, rushed out the door and then later on came home from work the temp had dropped to 69 (my room is incredibly air conditioned) and the tank smelled like wet feet and dead hookers
i have a 20g that i was planning to upgrade into anyhow, as well as plumbing the 10g in (via pvc overflow and a return pump) as a sump/refug/skimmer
what is my best course of action here?
i've heard trash the water and sand, boil the rock and use new live rock to innoculate the old rock with life once in the new setup. is this accurate?
what skimmer/pump should i be looking at? are 1/2" drains going to cut it or should i go with 3/4? i was planning on taking my time setting this one up, but i guess i need to get these questions taken care of ASAP now, so, thanks in advance

mike

Your rock is fine just a little die-off it will create a cycle but otherwise your fine .Some fresh rock to re-populate it will help.

I would not take near the drastic course of action you described, just do a water change (50% if you want to be aggressive) and get a better pump.

I agree with others: just a glitch, no drastic action. But try to take precautions so that doesn't happen again.

sassafrass, cvrz, sk8r : thanks for the tips on not panicking. the smell is already starting to fade. i am, however, still using the unreliable pump, and would still like to plump the 10g in as a refugium/sump so that i can put in a pump that i can rely on, i dont trust the HOB ones for more reasons than just random shut offs.
any tips for this process? now that i have the time to do it right?

also chimmike and mortis13 i am the guy who pulls ladies of the evening who met unfortunate ends from our local lake. we arent hiring but i heard theyre losing a lot of hookers down south.

lol im a printer, it just smelled like dead fish which reminds me of.. bad.. women.

oh and as for measures so it doesnt happen again i have a younger, unemployed brother who im paying 5dollars a day to check on the tank every 5 minutes
haha
capitalism at its finest

Are you asking about an overflow? Not real sure what you're hoping to get. If I were you, I'd drill the 20 gallon tank if you want to "do it right."
