So left this hobby 10 years ago when I was a young father of twins working 2 jobs...well my kids are interested in doing this hobby with me. I'm looking at buying a used tank and I can't remember the reputable brands for equipment. I'm looking for mostly a fowlr setup maybe some mushroom coral or anemone maybe. The tank I'm looking at doesn't come with a great light, I'm looking at replacing it without breaking the bank.. any suggestions on lights? And I'd like to hear your thoughts on the setup of the aquarium..

If your just considering a FOWLR with some mushrooms then keep it simple. Mushrooms are pretty undemanding and you really only need enough light to see the fish. If an anemone is a priority then it's a whole new ball game IME. These things can be very temperamental and in most cases need a lot of light. (stable parameters too) That stock fixture probably won't suffice in the long run. HTH. GL.

That's my #2 tank. DId great for hammer coral. But you have to be on top of calcium supplementation. It'll grow mushrooms like a bandit. (No calcium sup needed for them.) I ran it with a metal halide 13,000 k for the stonies; then a Radion---just one Radion CAN handle it, because of the shape.

For cheap lights that will grow any coral you ever want, including SPS, look into Viparspectra 165W. Cheap, no nonsense light fixture for around $120. For normal sized 50G tank, one would be enough, but not sure if 1 works for corner shape.
