i just went barebottom.. i took out all the liverock, and then netted out as much livesand as i could, but the powder-fine reef sand just sifts through the net.. (i had to return the liverock because i have no container to keep them in and dont want them to die off)

what should i do to get the fine livesand out?

I agree, before each water change turn off your circulation pumps and return pumps, wait 30-or so minutes then slowly suck out the sandy areas, after 2-3 water changes most should be gone.

i would by a cheap trash can fill it with new salt water shake out your rock in the tank then place it in the trash can and then siphon it all out i'm doing it today

So if you still have sand in your tank your not BB yet...;) Anyway, take a shop vac to the bottom. you might pull 20 gallons of water but I bet the sand will be gone.

siphon, as others have said. for real hard to reach places take airline-tubing and attach it to a wood-dowl. Leave about 4-5" from the end of the dowl that will be in the water and just start the syphon and aim the tubing with the attached dowl, its great for tight spaces and waistes very little water.

when I did mine I took everything out and then got as much sand out as possible with a scoop

AND THEN I TOOK MY TANK TO THE CAR WASH AND RINSED THE REST OUT

Are you talking about sand floating around, or sand still on the bottom?

If in the water column and your skimmer isn't removing the sand, something is wrong.. Either your sump setup isn't BB friendly, the flow isn't barebottom friendly, or your skimmer isn't barebottom friendly.

Your flow should be able to get the fine sand off of the bottom.

Since you're a baller, I think you should invest in a pressure rated pump and some eductors/penductors.

Just my 2 cents.

I took all the water out of my tank and used a new dust pan to get the sand out. I cleaned up the rest with old towels and refilled tank. Glad I did it.
