Yeah, it's difficult for many of us who have seen the really pretty corals tanks to get excited about the tanks with corals at the public aquariums. I don't get too disappointed when I got though because I appreciate the other things that are there that I can not keep at home. Like the sharks, whales, dolphins, and other large animals.
I was pretty bummed when I went to sea world with my family on vacation after I went through there little aquariums, but then thought about the few things that really made it worth it. At Sea world they had a sweet shark pond, and shark aquarium with a tunnel heading under it, and the killer whales which were completely awesome.
This weekend I am hoping my gf and I will be able to swing by the aquarium in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh's aquarium had one display with a neat wave maker on it. You actually get to stand under the dump bucket.

Other neat thing is that it's actually in the zoo, so you get to enjoy that at the same time. Although I think if I ever go back, it won't be in January!

Yep, my wife and I felt the same thing when we went this summer. First, it was way too crowded, we had to wait several minutes just to inch our ways up to some of the displays. The ray tank in the central area I found depressing- what, no aquascaping??!!! It was like someone threw them into a swimming pool. Even the main circular tank I found a little boring.

We actually like the Camden aquarium much more and it's about 4 miles from our house. The main tank is enormous and full of variety, and they have a shark tank with a clear tunnel you can walk through. A couple of decent reef tanks as well.

oh cool maybe ill have to check it out myself

I was just at the Camden aquarium a couple weeks ago. Most exhibits were excellent, but they have really let their reef aquarium fall apart. Very disappointing. They had one large round tank filled to the brim with tangs and anthia but totally unnatural display and probably pretty hard on the fish. If you're ever in long island, atlantis marine world has a 20000 gallon reef that is worth seeing.

Unfortunately I think part of it may be funding and what brings dollars through the door. I'm sure they WOULD and TRY to make every exibit exciting, healthy, and the best possible. But there will be more priority on making things like predator or cetacean exibits shine the most. I know we as aquarium keeps appreciate just about everything in those places, but your average visitor isn't going to know a basslet from a bass.

Anyways Baltimore does have a couple of nice exhibits.

I think Camden Aquarium is awesome.

It has been a while but I wasn't impressed with Shedd Aquarium too much.

Waikiki aquarium is sweet considering how tiny it is!

NC State Aquarium in Pine Knoll (there are a few in NC...this is the only one I went to so far) was really neat. All the exibits were fantastic and interesting.

I still have to make the 4 hour drive to Atlanta...any tricks on how to make everyone disappear without going to jail?

The National Aquarium in DC is a disgrace.

Personally, I've always liked the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in Ca. Right on "Cannery Row!" (a favorite novel and movie of mine) It's pretty much a cold water aquarium to display a fine selection of local species that inhabit the central California coastal reefs and kelp beds. The central aquarium is a 60 foot deep glass tank housing a full size live KELP forest, complete with giant wave maker on the roof , to make the kelp and fish dance. they had lots of my favorite fish i used to catch out there. Perch, kelp rockfish , vermillion, garibaldi, green ling cod, chilli peppers, spotted flounder, white sea bass and halibut, just for fun.

they even had one of those 6 foot diameter circular tanks with a school of about a thousand sardines swimming endlessly in circles. after all, it is cannery row!

Good place to see if you are out there. Oh And did i mention the wild Otters?

Oh...and I do have to say that tank at Exotic is just beyond awesome, to add to the thread starter. I have yet to find any store with a tank of that caliber...and i've probably been in more stores than all ya'll combined :p

Oh Yeah! I havent been to Exotic aquatics in quite a while. but last time their table top acros in the display tank were like big umbrellas!!

We tried to hit the aquarium in Pittsburgh early in the morning before the speakers started and the doors really opened to Macna. The whole city is missing street signs all over the place. It would have been impossible to figure out how to follow the directions if Steph did not have the mileage.
We turned down a road after 3.5 miles that had no sign to tell us what it was then went 2.6 miles and made a left on to another road with no sign. Then we hit a detour sign and went left as it advised and continued down that road waiting for another detour sign... and kept waiting... and waiting. Aren't detours suppose to have more then one sign? We never found the aquarium/zoo, but we did get to see some extremely run down poor areas. I was not impressed with the little bit of Pittsburgh I saw.
