Like i have posted am transferring from my 40 gallon tank to a brand new 110, am buying around maybe 1 inch of sand since i hate having alot of sand that you can see over the glass and its all dirty and about 70 pounds of live rock the rest i will get 60 pounds of 1 year old rock from my 40 gallon tank when am ready to transfer everything into the new tank.I have been hearing from alot of people and also when i posted that wet/drys are not really good filters and that they are technology from the 70s and so on and that the bio balls store nitrate and are not good filters at all, a friend of mine has suggested me to start refugium filtration like he has, a refugium with around 4-5 inches of sand live rock and catomorpha algea to take care of nitrite and phosphate, with a filter sock to server as a mecheanical filter and some kind of chemical filtration with the addition of a proteim skimmer and calcium reactor with possbile phosphatye reactor if phosphate levels are not rightfully trated by the catomorpha. What do you guys think? is the refugium better than a wet/dry, i wana keep a tank of mostly stonies and maybe some soft so i dont really want even the slightest of nitrite spikes.thank you.

For SPS tank, a refugium is better. I'd consider a Bare Bottom fuge with a remote Deep Sand Bed and a wopping big skimmer. Definitly a Ca Reactor, posh reactor and maybe a Kalk reactor

Nah, i wont have bio balls to begin with am only using one or the other not a combination of both, i think i am defenetly making up my mind and going with a refugium am, am making it a big sump to increase total volume of water maybe a 55-65 gal extra making the tank around 180 gallons with the refugium and proteim skimmer and calcium reactor.

For a 110 how big do you guys think the sump/refugium should be?, i know the policy is the bigger th better, can you guys tell me a specific number of gallons please.

Will it be under your 110? Or remote from the stand?

If it's under the stand, what dimensions do you have to work with?

That 40 you have might do the trick!

yeah yeah am not getting a wetdry ever again and yes it will be under the tank but the thing is i cant use my 40 gallon tank for it because it will be running same time as the 110 waitting till it has cycle so i can transfer the things into it.
