Thanks Kahuna. I am very lucky to get such a seemingly healthy fish. So far, it's doing great in the QT and eating like a little pig

Yeah, I figured he was referring to the flavocoronatus, just wasn't sure which fish he would considered to be the one. All of the photos I have posted in this thread are of the same fish, which probably had some genetic input from flavocoronatus. Would it be something if this was actually a pure flavocoronatus but it's highly unlikely as the second band has too much black in it.

most probably a tinkeri x burgess but could also be a burgess x flavoconatus.
gorgeous fish nonetheless and enjoy it!
roaps butterflies are very hardy and begin feeding almost immediately. declivis, tinkeri, burgess, flavocoronatus and mitratus.
although the last member, the guyotensis is rather sketchy in taxonomy and i wonder if it's placed in prognathodes... hmm..
any who BEAUTIFUL AND I'M SO JEALOUS! coming from a roaps lover too!

Thanks LemonLemon. The genetic input of this fish I am sure can be the subject of enless debate, but I think it could be a combination of all three. The second band contribution is most likely burgessi and the yellow on it is a trademark of the flavocoronatus.
It's definitely a great feeder. I just hope it fairs better than the other Roaps I have tried in the past, which all started great but subcumbed later during the QT process. Their stomachs essentially developed an open sore and exploded
Keeping my fingers crossed on this one as it's not exactly easy to come by as compared to the others.

well yes could be all three! i'm not up for debate but i'm favouring the flavocoronatus blood
i love that fish.hmm they are all easy fish to feed, acclimate etc. don't know why the problem arise in the QT.

Not sure why I had problems with the others in the past. It almost seem like they had internal parasites and the Prazi killed the parasites but that in turn caused harm to the fish themselves as their stomachs bloated and then essentially exploded.
I meant one of the parents was, but everyone already figured that out. LOL
Wouldn't it be great if it turned out not to be a hybrid, but a new species?

no worries i did not take it the wrong way at all! i've had my fair share of people who love arguing for the sake of arguing in my local forum too.
yes it's gorgeous. still unsure why your previous ones died in QT but i'm sure your currrent "mutt" will prosper very well for many years to come.

Thanks Lemon! I will be starting Prazi soon as the mutt is eating extremely well so I am kinda nervous. It has progressed to eating frozen mysis in addition to the frozen brine shrimp and live blackworms that it was devouring before. Got my fingers crossed!

Sounds more like it was infection/complication from being pinned, since many of these are deeper water.

Here's a quick update:
After almost 4 months of QT and plenty of time in the prop tank to make sure it stays clear of all corals, the mutt finally made it to the 300. I made a cage out of eggcrate the size of a 5 gallon tank so it's got plenty of room to roam around in.
