I came home from lifeguarding tonight, and i found half my light's hanging kit broken from the ceiling. luckly i dont have a rimless tank anymore. needless to say ... huge holes in my ceiling from where that side of the hanging kit came out of the drywall... 3 burned out bulbs... etc.

any ideas on how to patch up 1 inch holes in the ceiling?

Also might have a few (2-3) powerbrites available since i am no longer going to use them. (they are just too much for some of my LPS corals... making them unhappy from too much light)

that sucks a lot, sorry to hear it. as far as patching the ceiling, drywall mud, paint and primer, nothing to worry about. how'd the tank hold up?

this happened to tom from TRS at his house years ago with an aquaspacelight. I was amazed at how little damage the tank took, that fixture was heavy as hell.

Luckly nothing but a bit of drywall got into the tank (which i netted out/the overflow got it and it went into the skimmer)

im surprised that side of my tank which the fixture hit didnt crack. guess that answers my question of why tanks have rims.

i will be getting 3 purple actinic bulbs to give my tank a more purple look, and some legs for my light. (and for piece of mind)

If they are no bigger than the last joint on your finger to its tip use some quick setting joint compound 20 minute mix it pretty stiff and put a good amount in; it will sag a bit but before it is completely dry (way after it is to stiff to work) you can take the sag off by slicing it flush with the putty knife. From there I might tape it, or just finish coat it with the same 20min or a regular drywall compound depending on how much I was worried about the final look. Drywall is easy to fix other than it is above even if you have to cut out and patch a piece joist to joist.

Crappy luck Dan, amazing that this didn't cause more damage though! I'm glad to hear that thing didn't crack and end up spilling everything.
