What am I doing wrong?

Im in the process of fighting algae (cyano). I have a 30 with a 5 gallon sump. I have a ASM GX-1 running. I do weekly 10 gallon changes. ALso in the process of adding a phosban to run carbon, would this help ? What other things can i do?

How long are the lights on? how many fish do you have? how much do you feed? Maybe it would help more if you run phosban instead of carbon to fight the problem.

Could be:

Lack of flow
Ur probably using NON RO/DI water-DO not USE hose water/tap etc.
Ur bulbs are probably old.

Yes run carbon and Yes run some phosphate remover.

I don't agree with the flow as I have cyano growing right in front of a return line that's flowing about 5000 GPH. :D you can watch it wave like a flag in the flow.

I'd go more for excess nutrients in the tank. That's what feeds alage.

I have two small clown fishes that i never feed. All top off water are water shop bought and all water changes has been water i get from the fish shop.

My bulb was just been changed a couple of months ago. so I know it's not the bulb. The hours are 3pm-10pm.

How old is the setup?? STOP doing some many water-changes. Let the tank stabilize. It sounds like it is NOT mature yet. Give it sometime.

This system has been running for over a year. So im pretty confident that it has been stabilized.

IM not very confident in it. What's a reliable fish shop to get water from? I have always gotten my water from the REEfs in Anaheim.

Does it look like this?

I can rinse my carbon under my kitchen sink for hours and grey water still comes out. I have no idea how to rid carbon of the dust.

Cheers

I just found your thread, how is your battle with the cyano?

I have just finished addressing some of the recent issues I caused. I added a chiller and it cut my flow way down, so tonight I gave the chiller its own dedicated pump. My tank now has sufficient flow again.

My skimmer is working well again. I am going to reduce my photoperiod and my feedings a little.

I think I stand a better chance now at beating this stuff.

Thanks
Josh

I just added the phosban reactor i got today from Sohal with carbon. Also did a 5 gallon water change and sucked out most some of the nasty stuff. So hopefully that will help.
