What am I doing wrong?

I've been trying hard to keep zoos in my main tank and nano tank. I don't know the secret, and they seem to close up and slowly fade away. My other corals, LPS and some SPS do fine with lots of growth in the tank. (Except for the mushrooms which don't really split, but that is another thread....)

I run carbon in both, but no skimmer in the nano. With medium water flow. Tanks have been around for 3 years. In my 100gal I run 175w MH and nano is running 24 watt PC's.

In my opinion, I think the water quality and parameters are great, although I do occasionaly have to keep phosphates in check.

So just to get an idea, do you thinks its food, light, etc...has anyone else experienced this? Ideas?

I am going to advise something controversial here;

try it without the carbon. Every time I run carbon (or other chemical filter media) some (not all) of my zoos react negatively. I have tried several times over the years and the reaction is pretty immediate.

I am NOT saying carbon or other media is bad, I am NOT saying this happens to everyone. I AM saying, that in my tank, SOME of my zoos react negatively to these types of filtration.

Never tried vitamin C and carbon less.

I can experiment in my nano.

In my nano, I also have macro in the tank for nutirent export. Do you think that might be a problem?
