What Am I

Here are some pics I took today of my "unknown" coral and for comparison the "war" coral.

it almost looks like a diploastrea but that color is way brighter than any diplo i have seen. nice find whatever it turns out to be.

I am convinced now that it is the same coral as the "war coral" just a different color.

I think I will call it the "Red Army Coral". Everyone loves a cool name.............well not everyone but who cares.

I feel pretty lucky to have it, I owe alot to my local LFS.

I have a solid red Favia Pentagona & though your coral is very beautiful I don't think it is the same. The coralite structure seems to be very semetrical as pentagona are more random. Just my observation & my opinion yours is a very nice coral to say the least.

I wanted to compare on the same thread page as yours Donovan. I will say the none of the L.A. wholesalers could actually say 100% what it was. To the untrained eye(me) they are so much alike.

The random corallite thing kinda throws me, they both seem very random.

Actually I think Donovons is right. I am pretty sure his is a pentagona and yours is a little different. Notice how yours has more space between the polyps. As mentioned before it has more varying septa as well. I think what Donovon is talking about is since the pentagona share the coral walls so much there is no space between polyps. It gets flat sides sometimes and some that are not very round. Yours seems to have very round polyps. Not to knock your coral but trust me. I have the original colony of the War Coral. I know what it looked like when it first came in from the ocean. It has never looked like yours. It is a very smooth coral. The septa don't stand out nearly as much as yours.

Wholesalers don't generally know much about species identification (especially in L.A.) (not counting Gresham).

Red Army coral sounds cool. That should go over well with the Cali reefers.

when I was in cali I took a pic around to the "good coral guys" they had no idea. They have all seen war coral to them its "just a favia" (i laughed at their response) . They could not ID that coral at all. Its like a hybrid between a favia and a challice thats the best they could do.

imo its beautiful whatever it is and i would be super proud of placing something like that in my tank looks like the spinosa though
