I have a180 gallon mixed reef. I am looking to add an angel fish of sometype. I have 3 tangs some anthias and a clown.
Thank you Dustin

Hi Dustin,

What are you looking for. The dwarf or large angel species.

Personality/Colour?

Lots of choices to choose from.

I love the emperor angel, has always been a favourite of mine.

And for the dwarves, the ever popular flame.

I dont know about the saftey of the corals because i only have fowlr tanks but i like the scribbled angel fish and i have read thhat the regal angel fish fair better in a reef setting

I am not reallt thinking of any type regarding dwarf or large ones. Just looking for ones that are reef safe

My Potters Angels don't bother anything in my tank, but in the previous owner's tank, they were nipping SPS. I only have monti caps and digitatas as far as SPS goes. Everything else is LPS and Softies (mostly softies).

If you like larger ones, look into the Genicanthus angels. There are a few...Bellus, Swallowtail..my mind just went blank. Anyway, they are the most reef safe large angels.

My Emperor and Majestic both love polyps. They leave mushrooms and leathers alone. The Majestic was in a tank with SPS and LPS and never bother anything in there, but loves polyps.

since you have a reef you should look into a pair of bellus angels. Goldflakes seems to have a decent track record as well.
some of the smaller angels are more reef safe than the larger ones.

Angelfish

Angelfish

The only true reef-safe angelfish are the Genicanthus group(swallowtails). They are plankton eaters. That being said other angelfish can be put in a reef tank with caution. I have a bicolor and majestic in mine and the only thing they bite at is my pocillopora. I have stonys and mushrooms in my tank.

I like Genicanthus angels as well for reef tanks, but have seen majestic, regal and blue face in tanks many times. I really like both the male and female bellus angels, very pretty and reef safe:)

Genicanthus species, as previously stated, are the only guaranteed ones. Many dwarves (especially the potteri/bispinosus/multispinis complex and the argi/aurotonotus/acanthops complex) are relatively safe. I've heard a lot of success with ferrugata/loriculus as well. Avoid bicolors, though the similar joculator seems to be, from most reports, very well behaved.

FWIW (and I am not singling out you, chibils), Genicanthus angels are NOT guranateed. There are many reprots of them eating corals over the years. It is a far safer bet than the othere genera, but it is incorrect to say they are guarantees.

I just removed a lemon peel angel who had started picking at corals. I saw him him an elegance, australian cynarina, and a zoanthid in about 3 seconds. I did the lights on in the middle of night trick to get him out.

I just removed a Coral Beauty from my 75g a week ago. Since hes been out ive noticed better polyp extention on every single SPS and LPS I have.

Well, I wouldn't say "many" reports, but yeah, I've heard of the occassional geni eating an open brain or something..... still the safest bet, as others have mentioned.

No fish is 100% reef-safe, IMO. There are just verying degrees of risks. That being said, if I had a tank the size of his only one fish would top the list: Regal.
After, any Genicanthus because they represent a signifigantly lesser risk. The other is simply one of the most beautiful reef fish..

in my reef i have a flame angel not once had a issue with him and i have zoa's, caps, sps, some lps (candy canes) kinda a mix of everything never once had a problem...... and they are really pretty..but mine is kind of shy... but tank that size maybe you can do 3 of them or so

I have a Cherub, C. argi in my reef. But it would kinda lost in a tank that size. Maybe a harem?
