I am completely new to hammers. What are the criteria to grade hammers? By colour? Some hammers I saw have two different colour so does that make them higher grade than one colour?

Yes colors are the main designation for the grading. A green one can be a grade A, but a toxic green can be an Ultra. IME, stay away from some of the higher priced ones - not cause there better or not etc, simply because wall hammers have like a 90% mortality rate.

Unfortunately without knowing there are different type and thought hammer is for beginner.. I purchased a wall one. Not having much hope that it will survive for long.

Don't be discouraged yet, while many people suffer setback with wall, some have also successfully kept them for a very long time.

wall hammers are tough. make sure your parameters are stable. if you see a corner dying, take it out to treat immediately or the whole thing's gone. branching hammers are much easier imo.
