What are the latest and greatest supplements?

Wanted to get feedback on the latest supplements that people are using and work well along with ease of use.

Besides Calcium and Alkanlinity additions the trend is towards no reef additions and frequent water changes. The water changes provide the trace elements needed.

Being the consumer that I am, I chronically purchase and dumpesd things into my tank. That isââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦. until I wised up.
My supplementation routine consisted of weekly iodine, strontium, Coral-Vite, Reef Calcium and Reef Builder.
For the last few months, I have dumped NOTHING but Kalkwasser and RO/DI water into my tank and I must admit; it looks far better then ever.
The moral of my story:
There is no profit in a company telling you that you SHOULD NOT be dosing your system with their product. The industry is all about the almighty $. As long as they can convince us that we need to buy their expensive supplementations, they make their bottom line.
I strongly doubt that a situation could exist where not supplementing for a few weeks could hurt your system (other the CA and ALK). Give it a try; I bet youââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll like the results (financially and asteticly).

What about the bacteria ampules? I bought some and am gonna start adding them tomorrow or on Sunday. Lets see what happens, what it does.....

They are completely not needed. What do you hope these will accomplish?

I"ve had good success with Seachems Reef advantage calcium and reef builder> But I have also heard that B-ionics two part has good success.> and its pretty affordible

The latest and greatest additives: patience, knowledge, time, effort... and they are free!

I wouldn't add anything other than calcium and alk if you need it, and perhaps magnesium if you are having balance issues. Never add something you don't test for.

I read about them on the aquaconnect and prodibio site. For starters they are supposed to help your tank cycle faster.
Also they are supposed to help prevent certain algae types and clear up the water. My LFS uses them, another store that has specialised on corals and a well known German review/info site used them and reported positively.
I put in the first 2 ampules and noticed that my water was clearer about an hour afterwards.

Maybe this stuff isn't that popular on the other side of the pond?

I've never heard of this particular brand but we do have some bacteria here that can be bought. It's nothing that isn't on live rock already though. Also you never know what else is in there besides the bacteria. It doesn't do anything that time and patience won't.

I would much rather just let nature take its course in the cycling process

Well I thought I'd give it a go, the stuff they write on the site sounds pretty good and my LFS is happy with it. Like I said the water did clear up after I put it in. Lets see.....

Just thought it isn't that popular in the States, because I've never seen anybody write about it yet.

Hi!

Yup, I started adding another ampule called reef booster as well. It contains besides other things, Omega 3 fatty acids. All I can say is that my stones are feeling better, my suncoral is blooming, my anemone is huge and my euphylia (spelling?) did heal much better than expected. If anyone has read my other threads, they will have noticed, that I have had huge difficulties with stones in the past. I'm not saying that it's just the bacteria and reef booster ampules that are responsible for the improvements in my tank, BUT they certainly have contributed towards the improvement and so work.
Another thing to consider is the fact, that algae (the pesky algae on the glass) take noticebly longer to regrow after I have added bacteria and grows faster towards the end of the 2 week cycle. I am considering adding the bacteria every 10 days (I'm just waiting for my latest order).

Have a nice day!

I average about six 10% water changes a month. I still have to add some cal, alk and ph buffer from time to time.
