I have a 55g long tank, and am VERY sick of my yellow tailed damsels (2 of them) since I cannot add anything to the tank without it getting torn up in a matter of 24 hours. I previously had a royal gramma, who was also very aggressive being the only one in the tank for a period of time. What are some species of fish which can coexist with new additions to a tank? I'm not looking for anything particularly flashy or unique, just some fish when are peaceful with each other. Could some of you experienced guys who have dealt with a lot of fish first hand give me some information?? Reading stuff online doesn't necessarily do justice to the true temperament of some fish. Thanks!

Firefish are pretty docile from my experience. Most of them are very pretty too. I would definitely recommend a pair of them if you're looking for peaceful fish.

Cardinals are also very peaceful fish FME. I've owned a few and they've all been super docile and relaxed. They also look pretty darn cool. Especially the Banggai Cardinal.

You're going to need a cover with practically most fish, to be honest. I'm guessing your tank a reef? If not, I wouldn't be concerned with the slight light loss caused by an eggcrate top. If so, I still wouldn't be TOO concerned, depending on which inverts you're keeping.
Pretty much ANY fish will jump, and IME, even those that folks would think "no way...that fish will NEVER jump" can end up on the carpet.

Absolutely true!
My friends and I have had Chromis, Damsels, Wrasse and even Angelfish go carpet surfing. I've even had a Tiger Pistol Shrimp go on a one way flight! Some fish are far more prone to jumping than others (Dartfish and Dottybacks) but we never suspected it from these guys. It's the biggest risk associated with any topless setup.
Sorry I wasn't trying to find out if they jump or not...... In regards to clownfish, chromis, gobies, and wrasses, are they really docile and non-aggressive? I''m trying to find out if they will nip up other fish that get introduced after them. I'm still stickin to my thread topic

I had a trio of Chromis. They were peaceful and active when they're juveniles but as they matured, they become solitary started acting dickish toward each other and some of my smaller fish. I got rid of them.
Some Clownfish (like my Percula's) can be territorial and attack intruders. I've heard that Ocellaris clowns are peaceful though.
I have very little experience with Wrasse. I know that most are not reef safe though so be careful. I also urge you to stay way from Sixlines. Pretty much all of the ones my friends have had have been aggressive and attacked other fish. As far as the Fairy/Flasher Wrasse are concerned, I wouldn't be able to tell you much about them. Perhaps someone else will.
I've owned a Clown goby that never once bothered anyone. I now have a Yellow Watchman (paired with a Pistol shrimp) that has claimed a cave and merely chases intruders away.

Most clownfish will eventually get territorial and thus aggressive, especially when they start breeding. They are damsels, after all! 
Cardinals are generally docile towards other fish, but with the exception of threadfins and red-spots (which can be kept in groups), the common species like Banggais and pajamas tend to be aggressive towards each other.
I had a yellow assessor that was the mildest-mannered fish I've ever owned. He hid all the time, though.
Fangblennies, in spite of their intimidating name, are very peaceful towards non-related fish. They're also very active and graceful.
Most of the itty-bitty gobies like neons, tiger gobies, clown gobies, etc., are very peaceful. They don't always get along with other members of their species, but they leave other fish alone.
Finally, watchman gobies are peaceful little fish, IME, and fun to watch if you pair them up with a pistol shrimp.
