What are the most likely items to cause a flood?

ATO disasters are 1> limited to the size of your ATO reservoir
and caused by: a) not fastening the hose to tank well, so it flips out and feeds your floor
b) a not-snail-proof float that tricks the ato
c) letting the topoff hose touch the water, and this includes in power-down condition. If it doesn't touch, it won't siphon.
d) having one spit at a power-out---without means in place to direct the spit into your sump.
e) having one completely overflow because the cup wasn't emptied in a timely way. Most take a week or two.

Siphonage is one principle of watery physics every reefer needs to know early. Siphoning runs high to low, so there is a gravity gradient; and it can be stopped by a siphon break, which means an air hole at the top of the line. Any time air gets into a siphon hose, it won't siphon. If you don't know these things, please look the terms up in wiki with instructive diagrams, because CARPET!!!!

Most of my floods have been totally my fault. Just dumb stuff like moving the ato line out of the way to fiddle with something in the sump and not putting it back after so it kicked on and dumped for a while. I'm awfully glad I don't have carpet lol. I was stunned when I moved my old tank and the wood under it was perfectly fine. Didn't expect that at all.

so I guess my most likely cause is myself. But second most is goofy diy projects I do. I see this a lot when people talk about drain setups and hob overflows. You'll have one poster in the thread saying "you really need an emergency drain if you're trying to run a full siphon drain" and then 6 other people say you don't. It's really tempting to listen to the 6 guys telling you what you want to hear, but the one careful poster is usually right. I don't think diy stuff is inherently more dangerous, but it does give you opportunities to cut corners or make mistakes so you have to be careful to really do your homework.

Vibration and bulkheads. You definitely want to include checking all bulkheads for small leaks and loose nuts. 3/4 of my floods have been because of this. The other 1/4 was because my syphon breaks got clogged with salt and lost power. Water kept draining into my sump until it reached the end of my return nozzle.
