What are the Rarest SPS

Red Robin stag, one of, if not the greatest, of the red Acros stags... It's out there, but it's very fussy and has terrible frag success rates, particularly for small frags that are so popular today... It's not uncommon for RR frags to sit, pale and brick red, with no PE whatsoever, for months on end after fragging...

Those that have a colorful deep-pink/red RR growing well are lucky indeed...

Well most of the SPS I have aren't "rare" most just tyree or ORA LE. Others are just plain common like my caps, digis, millie, and birdsnest. I have Tyree Sunset, ORA Red Planet, ORA Tri-color valdia (this one RTN'd on me save 3 frags), and Garf Bonsai. I don't think alot of the desireable SPS out there are "rare" more just expensive. Now the orenji monti and stuff like the simplex and PM are rare as they are hard as hell to find.

I think the PM is rare due to its slow growth and high mortality rate. There are a lot of other SPS that are initially hard to get, but after a year or two the market is flooded with them.

I got a royal plum from wwc a few weeks ago, it was made le a while back but I dont see a lot of frags or pics so maybe it is a little on the rare side for the moment.

Yeah check out the thread I started on the royal plum further down the forum. 700+ views and only 1 pic.. I also scorwed mine at WWC.

I did not know this was so rare. All my frags have been doing great and my LFS has about 6 of them doing fine. I got mine from a local reefer that also has a good size colony. One thing I have noticed about this piece is has it get bigger it gets more red. It took a long time to get going too but now its growing pretty fast. Also wanted to mention the Ice/fire its pretty rare and really nice. Here is a pic of my Red Robin...

Rare corals are going to be your wild colonies. By the time a coral has had time to acquire a name or edition notation, enough people have it to consider it coveted, but not necessarily rare any more. There are species that may be less common than others, but in terms of color morphs, there is nothing new under the sun they say.

The Oregon Tort, like most fad named corals, came in brown just like everything else, and accidentally became astounding once given perfect parameters... there really isn't magic to it other than plain luck.

Well i live in the Uk so all those nice SPS you get in the US are rare to us .. we get the left overs.

So give us your purple lokani

No Gun rights and no access to good corals too. Geeze O pete if I lived in the UK I'd shoot myself. j/k :)

Seriously.

While the question of the original post is at hand.

I guess the thing is...does it matter?

I mean, unless it's like gonipora and only a handful of hobbyist can keep it alive...all SPS become common eventually don't they?

And there's another factor. I predict that after the economic dismay of the next 5 to 7 years is over that the resultant tech boom will bring some quite remarkable measuring and controller technology to the hobby. Then even the rarest hardest coral ever known will be easier to keep without all the mystery of snake tonics (zeo) and voodoo.

Just my micro/macro take on it.
It's not going to matter unless of course the oceans die in the meantime.

Then they'll all be rare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
