the second pic seems to have only come out recently as ive never noticed it before...is this apistasia? or some other type of pest?

thanks in advance

The first one does look like a tube worm, or featrher duster. There is another in the background of the pic.

The second pic could be a number of things, but Im sure some one who knows for sure will reply. If youd like to try and find out for yourself try searching colonial hydriods, and aptasia  It looks similar to some yellow polyps I had too though :)

There is also a small brownish tube in the lower left corner of the pic. That appears to be a vermetid snail. Watch those, they can get out of control on you. I know this well.

Yep top pic feather duster and second pic aptasia.....bad stuff.

Barbra, your talkin about the tube sticking out of the rock, thats bad? I have some of those and peanut worms come out of them.

Unfortunately those bottom brown ones are colonial hydroids. They spread QUICK. I would take a piece of putty an completely cover that colony and any others.

Yep. Just make a small amount and squish it on them.

They become a problem when your corals start growing near them and get burned. They are also ugly in large amounts.

ok thanks dudes, ill stick some epoxy on them tonight while doing my weekly maintainence, weird they only showed up now after 18 months!

Sorry for stealing the thread but I'm also having a problem with vermetids. Spreading like crazy, even my snails have two or three on their shells! Yesterday I broke off about 80 or 90 of them. Has this worked for you? Or will they just grow back from whats left on the rock?

I use a thick kalk paste for mine. I turn off my waterflow and use a turkey injector for a syringe. Wait a couple minutes and turn the flow back on. Pretty much stays on. It's an excellent picture BTW

I too tried that, but like aiptasia they usually come back. The problem is the tend to end up in the tiniest cracks and with their tube being so small they retract back in and the kalk is useless.

The second picture might be frilly zoos and not aptasia but its hard to tell with the focus. The stalks look thick compared to the tenticles. They're ugly either way though, so kill'em just in case.

problem solved hopefully !

i d hate to use this method if u had a serious outbreak of them lol.

i have loads of the "small brownish tubes in the lower left corner of the pic."

i like them, when the water's cloudy (after a water change) they extend their fishing lines!
why are they a problem ? do the numbers just get out of control?

ps thanks for the quick advice and ids given everyone....fingers crossed i nipped these guys in the bud!

Vermetids can get out hand. They can start popping everywhere: On snail's shells, inside pvc pipes and some of them are razor sharp. I've cut my finger a couple of times!:mad2:

They wont damage anything but many people consider them an eye sore.

WOW! Thats a great tip! I have always treated them as aptasia. And just like aptasia, for everyone you don't kill, they seem to spit out 20 more. I would have never thought about epoxy for the tight areas! Thanks!
