This is what I use in my freshwater tank, if this is for your reef tank I would recommend changing out floss at least once a week, preferably twice to avoid nitrate issues.
I would not use filter foss of any kind on a saltwater tank. A lot of people won't use stuff like this because if you don't stay on top of cleaning it out you will get a NO3 spike and I mean cleaning it every 2 or 3 days. I would not let it sit for a week unless you want some level of NO3 in your tank. I'm not a fan of sponges as well that they use in premade sumps.
I have been changing it out every 2 days (I'm ushering the blue and white filter pad right now) so I will keep on top of it. Just checking to see if the pillow fill would work since it is a lot cheaper then the blue and white filter pad.
I've used a couple of bags of 'Morning Glory'floss in a pea green bag, from Walmart. It was great because it didn't shed or have loose fibers floating willy-nilly about. This last bag, still Walmart but not Morning Glory.
