what are you using for filter floss?

I was at walmart ans saw they had polyester fill for pillows and was wondering if anyone is useing the same stuff for filter floss and if not what are you using?

This is what I use in my freshwater tank, if this is for your reef tank I would recommend changing out floss at least once a week, preferably twice to avoid nitrate issues.

Walmart, Michaels, JoAnnes fabric, etc, etc, whoever has just plain old polyester pillow stuffing, and the cheapest.

I would not use filter foss of any kind on a saltwater tank. A lot of people won't use stuff like this because if you don't stay on top of cleaning it out you will get a NO3 spike and I mean cleaning it every 2 or 3 days. I would not let it sit for a week unless you want some level of NO3 in your tank. I'm not a fan of sponges as well that they use in premade sumps.

I have been changing it out every 2 days (I'm ushering the blue and white filter pad right now) so I will keep on top of it. Just checking to see if the pillow fill would work since it is a lot cheaper then the blue and white filter pad.

When i do use any at all i use 100 or 200 micron filter pad and filter socks ....

I Recommend you use Nothing . Except when you stir up the water and need to clear it up

You can wash this stuff over and over in washing machine with 1/2 cup of bleach and reuse.. Do not put in dryer it will shrink

I've used a couple of bags of 'Morning Glory'floss in a pea green bag, from Walmart. It was great because it didn't shed or have loose fibers floating willy-nilly about. This last bag,still Walmart but not Morning Glory.

I use the polyester fill from Walmart and change it out twice a week. I haven't had any issues with it, nitrate or otherwise.

Would cheese cloth work? That stuff is cheap. Might not be able to clean it though.

This is what I'm using right now but cost a lot more then the fiber fill at Walmart
