What brand of salt?

To each his own...I think the salt debate is a pointless discussion personally. Find what works for you, and stick with it.

PS-My drive to Tulsa to buy salt is really rooted in my quest just to go see Scott. He has never tried to lie to me, or sell me something I didnt need. That kind of service is hard to find in this state

I never understood the availability part of reef crystals. IO is made by the same company. One would think if IO is everywhere, reef crystals would be too. As far as the Holmes Farley concoction, i was tempted to try some of it but the ingredients would cost me more than the 20.00 worth of gas to round them up like Travis mentioned.

Oh yes, I agree with you eddy. Stability is the key to success whether it's salt, temperature, etc. And FWIW, my salt purchases are directly based on my trips to Tulsa or OKC for an errand run. I don't just drive to Tulsa or OKC just because I need salt.

One trip to Lowe's gets me about 3.5 gallons at about $12. It's a little more expensive than buying a 50lb bag of Dowflake, but with gas prices, it hurts to make it to OKC to get it. But, the Lowes is right across the street for me.

Thanks for the cattle prodding, dustin. I was getting a little off the point. Point is, for me it's a mix of IO: RC and Oceanic. IO/Oceanic if I'm a little short on money. And IO:RC or IO with additives if I'm in a pinch.

Sorry, please allow me rephrase, "I like Tropic Marin Pro Salt, I have always stable params with it, but i use a CA Reactor, so ALK is easy to deal with."

hope that is proper format

Ive been using IO but i dont like the fact it is so low in calcium.I wish i had never made the change from reef crystals in the first place. If you have a calc reactor then IO is the best for the money.Im wondering if anyone has ever tested the house brand from petco?I forget the name of it.

i have tried a qutie a few diffrent brands.....IMO and testing i have found.....

IO ....Alk in the high 10's and low on CA i didnt like the Alk that high

oceanic....500 and above on the Ca which then drives the Alk down to 7....

seachem ....good mix on the Ca at around 420 and alk around 9 but the buffering agent (borate) would give you a false Alk reading and you would have to subtract some acording to seachem???? plus i couldnt ever get my Mg above 1100

im on to TMPR like eddy and so far it is the best i have tested Ca at around 430 alk around 8.3 and Mg at 1250 was the last time i tested this new bucket

im sticking with TMPR for now it might be a little more expensive then some of the others but i dont like to have to mix up a batch and test to see what i need to add then retest with every WC....i just test the first mix out a the new bucket and go with it

I used IO but my calcium levels were too low. I then was told to try Oceanic. Most of the tanks I liked were using it. I get it cheaper by going to Petsmart.com and printing out the page with the best pricing on it and take that to the local Petsmart where they will honor the price.

Thanks Everyone for you insight and opinions, I' thinking about
going with Dustins mix or the Tropic Marine Pro.

How much of a difference in price is the Tropic Marine Pro?
and who carries it? I'd like it to be easily available, IO and
Oceanic can be found at the big pet stores which is a point
in their favor, however I like the numbers from the tropic
marine pro.

Thanks again

Chuck E.

I get tropic marin from scott, but im sure that most of the stores would order it if you asked for it.

TM Pro is about twice the cost of IO, at about 80 bucks a bucket. You just have to try it to know why people use it. After speaking with the reps from Tropic Marin at MACNA, I decided to try some of their ther stuff. Like the Pro Coral dips for newly purchased corals. And to be honest, it works awesome. I bought a coral not too long ago, from a "nameless" LFS, and the dip killed some 15+ flatworms. All in all, i like their products, better their product support.

What do you think Charlie?

So - ironically right before closing the store I got a phone call from a customer that has been in the hobby quite a while and he stated he changed to Tropic Marin a few weeks ago. I sold him a 175 bow front to uprgrade from his 125 because his 7 year [I think? anyway a long time] old Hammer had gotten too big and he was out of room. He has noticed a dramatic change in the animals - IMO screw the test results, the life is what tells the tale - although he did say a more stable pH and less supplements. This prompted a call to another friend of mine that claims zero supplements since changing to TMPR. By the way, both guys do a 10-15% water change weekly. Maybe I should reconsider??!?!?! I don't know - that crap is sooo pricey and I don't get any breaks from the distributor. Just thought some of you would like to know. I sure as hell can't afford to sell it in our premade RO water so don't get your hopes up! After reading this thread though - everyone should realize what works for some may not for others - we could start lots of debates on the way it should be done - deep sand, bare bottom, T5, VHO, etc.

Eddy

so far so good ...im always looking into making any kinda improvement that i can .....and so far i have been very happy with how it tests out...not only freshly mixed but how it keeps my levels in the tank stable without adding any buffers or Ca additions.......alto i think it has to do more with running a Ca reactor with this salt....

i have been getting my buckets through the mail and i dont mind the cost

im a big fan of the TM products and not a single coral of frag will go into my system without a TMPCC bath

charlie

Charlie, where are you getting the TMPCC from.

When I swap my frag tank out for the new one I will be doing a dip on all, plus an interceptor treatment before they move over.

P.

Paul

you might see if eric at fragfarmer has it....or even thatpetplace
i got mine from eric but......
i know it comes in and goes out quick!!!

charlie

I have been using the Red Sea Coral Pro salt since it came out and have been very happy. It has not been out that long so we will have to see about long term consistency but as far as I know the regular Red Sea Salt has always been one of the most consistent on the market just low on some of the elements.
