I just add 2 tbs of Dow Flake (calcium chloride) to 10 gal of freshly made water change water to bring the CA up to the 425 ppm range.

After that I just use Randy's "2 part", and using the 3rd part as he suggests my magnesium level is fine too. (I understand he has just tweaked the 3rd part due to elevated sulfates using Epsom Salts for too long, or using too much of it)

so if i were to do a 30 gallon water change would i do 6 tbs or do you test everytime and dose accordingly?

where do you get the dow flake or where can i find randys article id like to read this. i run a CA reactor but id like to do more with the fresh saltwater to make it better for the tank.

Kent did really well in the tests in the recent reports in Advanced Aquarist compared to many much more expensive salts.

Anyone here have good/bad experiences with Kent and know the Ca/Alk/Mg values when mixed with RODI water at 35ppt?
i have tried everything coralife, oceanic, reef crystals, instant ocean, and tropic marin...

i am getting low alk levels, it test at 7dkh on a freshly mixed batch... also i cannot keep my pH with kent salt, no matter what i try. other than that, i havent had any adverse effects on with SPS, great polyp estension and colors. ill try one more bucket to give it fair chance (just in case i got a bad batch) if it doest work out after that, i think i will be going back to Tropic Marin...

i do like kent better than all of the others outside of TM, so if i for some reason cant find TM, i will be getting kent as my 2nd choice...

So my recommendations are Oceanic and Ocean Pure right now.

Great!!!! Since I am just now setting up my tank I am making a pit stop on the way home to get some Oceanic Salt!!!! Now I have two bags of Reef Crystals that I have to sell. :p :D

I like Tropic Marin more than Reef Crystals for sure. You'll see. That Tropic Marin dissolves so quick...unlike reef crystals.

i was set to use seachem reef salt early this week but a member on the zeo site tested it and it came back w/ boron levels 4XNSW (16), way over what they state. for this reason only i may not use it, and instead use IO or oceanic, or a mix of each.

Seachem did state that their New Reef Salt would come out to around 16ppm. The old salt was in the 20's if I remember. The person who test Boron came out with a result of 18ppm, not 16ppm. Not a big difference but people who are interested in using Seachem might want to know.

Best to worst I've used: Oceanic, Reef Crystals, Instant Ocean.
Same gripes as everyone else with the Marineland Salts. Also the brown crud from RC and IO is odd.

Used Oceanic for the last year. Happy except for fast growing hard, reddish algae on the rock in my two tanks-anyone know what this is? It's really hard, not slimy. Just ordered my first bucket of Tropic Marin Pro.

Same here, always have brown slime on the bottom of my mixng container when I use IO or RC.

Kent has been very consitant for me .

normal batches mixed at 35ppt yeild

Ca:380-420
Alk:10 dkh
mg 1300-1350
po4 .04 :(

I have no problems with my ph except those associated with a ca reactor. My tanks run well all across theboard and my sps system rocks IMO.
