What Camera?

I don't think you would be wrong to go with either of those bodies. Both have an auto feature, for point and shoot mode, but will allow you full manual control when you are ready.

As far as lenses go, the 18-55 is a nice walk around lens but won't really allow you to get those great close ups you see around here. You would need a macro lens for those.

I got the 18-55 and 55-200 as a kit with the D40 body for ~$650 and couldn't be happier. (Well, I could be if it came with a macro for the same price. And a nice tripod too.) The two lenses give me enough reach for now, and I can get decent pics of my tank too. If you can find the VR version of the 55-200 in that same kit, do it.

If you are set on Nikon, which I hope you are(being a Nikon guy), check out Nikonians.org for lots of other info/help/etc.

Well, I did it. I got a Nikon D40 with the kit lens. Now I'm reading the manual trying to find out what I've got. I took a few pics with the auto setting and they turned out better than anything I ever did with the Coolpix. The colors are almost right without post processing. The actinic pics are good too and I haven't even set the white balance. It will probably take me a couple of weeks to go through all the options. I should have done this a long time ago!

Welcome to the club. You're about to find out how expensive a hobby can be!!!!!!

But it's a heck of alot of fun. Get used to taking it where ever you go. After a bit, taking 2 or 3 hundred pics a day becomes common place!!!!

Alright I think we are going to go with the d40x body and 15mm-55mm lens for everyday use. We were also thinking about getting the Nikon Micro-Nikkor 60mm f2.8 lens for corals shot. What does everyone think?

I'd get the 105/2.8, the Nikon if you can swing it, or the Sigma. Either will take great macros and will also give you a bit more reach when walking around.

I'm saving my nickels and dimes for the 105/2.8 Nikon. It's about $750 but from what I can understand it is the ultimate for macro shots.

the kit lens is usually good for beginners. you can get some pretty good shots out of it if you know how to use it. :P

BTW, check out the thread Canon VS Nikon on this forum. just a bunch of pictures everyone took with their nikon or canon cameras.

Agree, and most of my pics are with the kit lense.

Looks nice on paper, will probably be nicer in person and take great pics. If it's in your price range, why not?! Or wait for them to hit the shelves and score a deal on a D80?

Or buy the D40/40x and spend the savings on great glass?

My $.02.

I found a D80 on dealplus today for $569.95 regular: $799.95

Is that a deal I should not pass up?

Thats a good deal for a brand new body-only (I paid 550 for mine used), but keep in mind you will obviously need at least one lens (but I'm sure you'll want more).

Also, what site is that you would be buying thru? Make sure to plug in there name into resellerratings.com , as usually if it sounds to good to be true, it is...

If I were you I'd look out for a used D80 body (should be going for about 500ish now that the D90 is out, and a tamron 90mm macro lens (can be had for 250ish used I believe and is also a great portrait lens)

MODS: If this is not allowed remove it please. I am in no way affiliated with the website above. Just found a good deal and asking if it is truely a good deal.
